About Coach
I specialize in teaching students from 1st grade to 80 years old in beginning swimming. With those 18 and up I can do water safety skills, freestyle instruction, breast stroke instruction, back stroke instruction. I am also an open water specialist who works with open water swimmers and triathletes that want to improve their open water skills. I love people and kids. I have worked in public schools for 27 years at the K through 12 levels. I am United States Master Swimmer (USMS) Adult Learn to Swim Certified, USMS Level 3 Coach, and CPR Certified. I love the water and make my lessons fun and challenging!
Coaching is one of my passions. I help my swim students gain confidence both in and out of the water. My students like me because I listen to their needs instead of a cookie cutter approach that some coaches use. Every student I have is a unique personality and I learn more about my self by learning about your desires and goals in water. I started out just like you at one time and 5 years later I swam a 5K in a lake race. Whatever your goal is, I can help you get there. Seeing my students work toward or reach their goal is a pretty awesome reward for me.

Recreational swimming as a kid using public pools. Formally started swimming and coaching at the age of 4O. Joined USMS sqimming. At first recreationally and then transitioned to competition. That lead to open water swimming. swimming and coaching swimmers is a passion.
Member of United States Masters Swimming 🏊. Adult Learn to Swim Certification. Level 3 USMS coaching certification. CPR and AED trained. Life guarding trained.

Assessment of current skills and or strokes. Talk to client about goals and proceed from there. Recommend 1 lesson per week if student will practice on their own for 1 time per week. Otherwise I recommend 2 lessons per week.
I have worked with elementary age non- swimmers up to swimmers in their 70s. Abilities ranging from non swimmers to elite swimmers at the national level.
Look for a good match. Give the coach at least 4 lesson and look for a coach who is flexible and enthusiastic.
Two things come to mind on recent events I am fond of. One was organizing an open water clinic for open water athletes and triathletes. The other would be volunteering at an international age group event hosted at the world famous IUPUI Natatorium, venue for many world record swims.

Good experience over all. Focuses on many things so we kept moving forward but not bored with just one drill. More emphasis on explaining how to do something. The modeling the drills were great but some people learn with verbal explanations simple for some detailed for others.
My daughter, Faith started swim lessons with Coach Herman in June. Faith is almost 10 and could not swim or float at all. So Coach Herman was starting at ground zero. In less than 2 months she has made great progress. Coach Herman is patient and kind. I love how he pushes her to try new things. He gives her homework. Sometimes I (mom) get homework. Coach Herman has told us that Faith is a good communicator and that has helped with the progression. So thankful this opportunity for swim lessons with Coach Herman became available. Cindy (mom)
