About Steve
After forty years of coaching at all levels of USA Swimming, High School, College and lessons, I began mentoring and writing books, publishing DVD's and software. I also speak and run workshops at ASCA, the Olympic Training Center, the Canadian High Performance Coaches Convention, etc. I am now President of Tropical Penguin, Inc. and CompetitiveSwimmer. I invent and sell new specialized training equipment for swimmers. In private lessons I get in the water, video, and show you what to improve. I require you use an EyeSwim for personal stroke video between sessions and that you stay in touch with me by e-mail giving me your workouts and success stories. I also require you complete a goal card. I'll send you the Excel interactive format by e-mail. My goal has been to be the most effective one-on-one coach in the world and I strive to improve in every way. I'm not for the casual swimmer, but you don't have to be elite to be treated that way. I also have one of the best dryland facilities in the sport right here in California and we sell equipment to the top Universities and other teams and individuals around the world. I believe that swimming faster and stronger is fun! I admire my client/swimmers of all ages and abilities. If you have a passion to improve I can't wait to work with you. With a great stroke, and only with a great stroke, will you reach your potential. But you will need to be coached as a whole person so I am prepared and trained to help you in all areas from time management to spiritual growth, from strength and prehab, to fitness and flexibility.
I love teaching and coaching. My athletes have been world and nationally ranked hundreds of times, but the cool thing about coaching is that everyone at every level find his and her passion and really catches fire one I show them the right road to take and how to measure success. Add to this an environment of machines, computers, video, and just passion!! and people can't want for thier sessions any more than I can wait to see them and share in their success each time. :)
I started teaching as a lifeguard when I was 16 years old. Since then I have coached over 100 swimmers to the top ten rankings and national record holders in the the USA and dozens of swimmers who became world ranked athletes.
I have degrees in biomechanics and secondary teaching credentials in English, physical education, etc. I am also a fellow of the Covey Leadership Center, The Olympic Training Center, Robbins Reasearch and more.

As with any good doctor, the first step is to have the athlete complete a goal card. It's interactive and allows the swimmer to see the percentage improvement he or she wants, how far from records and time standards and then to map a way to reach those goals!
I then show ideal strokes of world class swimmers, many of them swimmers I have worked with! Then we video you and I get in the water with you to help you make the stroke changes you want to make. We then go to the most advanced specific swim weight room with computerized swim benches and hundreds of possible exercises and do the ones most important for you -- to gain power, flexibility, and endurance. This is a highly motivating experience!
I have worled with babies learning to flat and world ranked swimmers and their coaches. I write and speak internationally and design products and videos that are sold to coaches who work with Olympians everywhere there is competitive swimming.
Everyone who ever swam and some who haven't can call themselves and expert. But not everyone deserves your trust. My goal is to be the most effective one-on-one coach in the world. When you see what we have created here and the passion I have for your goals, you'll know why you will be successful.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Ask about their educational background. Being a fast swimmer doesn't mean they are great at teaching you to be your best. Ask what training they have had in motivational psychology; and what their worldview is. I am an active college coach as well as a mentor to coaches around the world. Ask what your coach is doing to serve the greater good of the sport and those in it. And ask how they make swimming faster fun! :)
