About Colin

I am a dedicated and passionate Music educator with over a decade of experience teaching in the independent sector. Holding a PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), I am currently a full-time teacher in a leading private international school, where I specialise in navigating students through the complexities of the GCSE, A-Level, and International Baccalaureate (IB) curricula.

Throughout my 10+ years in the classroom, I have developed a deep understanding of what it takes to excel in academic music. My professional background allows me to offer more than just tutoring; I provide an "insider's perspective" on exam board expectations, portfolio moderation, and the rigorous standards of the independent sector.

My teaching philosophy is built on clarity, encouragement, and high expectations. I specialise in taking complex theoretical concepts and making them accessible and engaging.

My Qualifications & Experience:

Professional Educator: 10+ years of full-time classroom experience in high-achieving independent schools.

Curriculum Expert: Extensive experience with AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and a particular expertise in the IB Diploma Programme.

Academic Background: PGCE-qualified with a focus on secondary music education.

Versatile Musician: While my focus here is academic, my background as a multi-instrumentalist and producer informs my holistic approach to music analysis and composition.

Outside of the classroom, I am a firm believer in the power of music to build confidence and critical thinking. I am committed to helping my students not only achieve the grades they deserve but also develop a lifelong, sophisticated appreciation for the subject.

Specialist Academic Music Tutoring | GCSE, A-Level & IB Excellence

As a current full-time teacher in a leading UK private international secondary school with over 10 years of classroom experience, I provide students with the same high-calibre, rigorous academic support found in the country’s top independent music departments. I understand the standards required to achieve top marks and how to bridge the gap between being a talented musician and a high-achieving academic student.

Specialised IB Music Support

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Music programme is unique and demanding. I offer expert guidance on:

Exploring Music in Context: Selecting diverse musical material and mastering the art of the written report.

Experimenting with Music: Structured support for the trial-and-error process of composition and performance.

Presenting Music: Curating a professional-standard submission for the final collection.

The Contemporary Music Maker (HL): Strategic planning and execution for the multimedia project.

Exam Board Expertise (GCSE, IGCSE & A-Level)

Whether you are studying Edexcel, AQA, or OCR, I provide targeted coaching for:

Appraising & Analysis: Mastering set works and developing the "unfamiliar listening" skills needed for the terminal exam paper.

Composition Portfolios: Helping students move beyond basic melodies into sophisticated harmonic language and structural development.

Technical Literacy: Intensive Music Theory (Grades 1-8) and Music Technology (Logic/Ableton) to ensure coursework is polished and professional.

Why My Approach Works

I don’t just "help with homework." I use my professional background to:

Interpret Mark Schemes: I teach students exactly what examiners are looking for in their analysis and creative work.

Strategic Planning: I help manage the heavy coursework load of the IB and A-Level, ensuring deadlines are met with high-quality drafts.

Critical Thinking: We move beyond "what" is happening in the music to "why" and "how", developing the high-level evaluative skills required for a Grade 7 or an A*.
