I like to have the individual explain the topic to me so that I can follow their logic and try to determine what other building blocks from earlier lessons they might not be comprehending. Then, I like to show them how to solve the problem while explaining the concept. I’ll do this a few times until I see the topic gaining traction, then I have them work a problem step by step while explaining each step to me. All along, I’m assessing and reviewing older relevant topics that do not seem to be as well understood, and balancing time spent on newer topics. Understanding math is like constructing a skyscraper; a shaky foundation makes for an unstable structure.
