About Sam
I’m currently in my third year at the University of Leeds, studying Financial Mathematics BSc. I achieved a grade 8 Maths GCSE and a grade A Maths A-level.
Whatever your student's starting point, I will help them to make as much progress as possible, and work through any limits they might hold about themselves. We will work to fill in gaps in their knowledge and apply that knowledge to solve problems, all whilst building their confidence, with the aim of gaining the best grades they can - whether that's a pass, or a really high grade requiring the knowledge and understanding that is not always covered in school.
I believe that when studying maths, confidence and enjoyment of the subject are as important as knowing the material (there are actually studies that show this!). While I recognise that not everyone loves maths, a positive working relationship with a supportive teacher/tutor can help students to grow in confidence, overcome problems and have a positive impact on their learning! I aim to be that tutor!

In my own experience, and that of others I have talked to, the best way to nail a topic and feel good going into exams is to use real-life exam questions and teach the necessary skills through those: think of it like learning a new board game - noone ever understands the rules at first, but once you have a basic understanding you can start to play and learn as you go - then it clicks much faster, and you learn when and how to apply the right rules! The same goes for maths. I will identify weak points in the curriculum, start with a small explanation of what the topic is, then together we will go through as many questions as needed, slowly giving them more space to attack questions alone (but with me there to help if needed) until they know they can do it by themselves in that exam hall! This method not only closes gaps but also helps students apply their material well and walk in and out of the exam hall with their chin up!
However, I am flexible and if a student feels like a different method of teaching suits them better I am more than happy to go with that. Each lesson is tailored to the individual student and not everyone is the same! In other words, everything can be adapted to best suit the needs of your student (otherwise what's the point in a personal tutor?)
