About Helena
I love everything English as a subject has to offer – from its insights into philosophy, history and politics to its technical breadth of knowledge. Understanding the inner workings of texts is a fundamental life skill that I am excited to share.
I graduated with a First Class in English from the University of Cambridge after winning the Newnham College Philosophy Essay Prize. I am now finishing my MA in 'English: Issues in Modern Culture' at UCL, where I am on track for a distinction.
Outside of private tutoring, I am a creative writer, essayist, professional academic translator (from Portuguese to English) and freelance editor.

I research my students' exam specifications and mark schemes in detail to tailor classes to their specific needs. I pay attention to my students' difficulties and strengths and shape classes around them. I like to set students a small piece of independent work to complete before the next class so that they can receive detailed written and verbal feedback.
For younger (KS1 and 2) students (including 7+, 11+ and 13+ preparations), I tie my lessons to the students' personal interests to help unleash their creativity and connect them to the texts they are working with. For example, if a student enjoyed swimming, I would set a creative writing exercise to describe the different sensory and emotional experiences involved in a swimming competition, or perhaps a persuasive writing exercise asking them to convince me that it is the most effective way to exercise. Younger students respond to a teacher who is empathetic to their view of the world and helps them express it as creatively and effectively as possible.
For GCSE, A Level and Undergraduate students, I often like to work in the Cambridge supervision style - beginning with an unseen extract that students independently annotate, followed by discussion and elaboration, and tied together by a short, independent piece of writing that allows the student to show off what they have learned and raise any misunderstandings.
For University interview preparation, I like to split sessions into two. The first half is a mock interview where I ask the student the kinds of questions they may have struggled with in the previous session. In the second half, I provide verbal feedback and help them expand on their answers. In between sessions, I provide a reading list to help the student hone their knowledge and confidence in answering a range of questions.

Perfect! Helena is lovely and I felt at ease straight away! Her sessions are structured and I got very specific and helpful feedback on my writing - now I have a clear sense of how to work through problems that I couldn’t before :)
- Lizzie is a great student. She was receptive to feedback on her writing and asked all the right questions. I wish her best of luck on all her academic endeavours :)Helena's response :

Helena guided me through the Cambridge application process, helped me sharpen my personal statement, interview prep and practice for my ELAT. She modelled her reading list on my interests and helped me to speak more confidently on the topics I am interested in. Thanks Helena!!
She's really nice and for non-verbal reasoning, she cut out paper nets that we made into cubes together. Now I know I can get those questions right on my tests. - Ada, age 10
Helena helped me go up by two grades in A Level English. She really knew the mark scheme and gave me super specific advice for my answers. I definitely recommend her :)
Helena is organised and follows a structured approach to teaching. Her lessons were carefully planned, and she ensured that each session was productive and engaging. Helena has been instrumental in helping my son prepare for his secondary school entrance exams, and cannot recommend her highly enough. She creates a calm and supportive learning environment and has a positive attitude.
Helena demonstrated a thorough understanding of the exam process and tailored her teaching to suit our son’s individual needs, ensuring he felt confident and well-prepared. Helena is warm, friendly, thoughtful and immensely capable. No hesitation in recommending her for tutoring.
Helena is very kind and incredibly smart, has great insight on literary analysis and a wonderful way of explaining her points.
