About Alex
I recently graduated from Oxford University with a First Class degree in Geography, achieving first class marks in all twelve of my finals papers. I was also awarded the Proxime Accessit Gibbs Prize for the joint second highest performance in examinations for Final Honours School Geography across the University. Whilst at Oxford, I studied for a range of papers across the breadth of both human and physical geography, as well as attending lectures and seminars from outside the discipline in subjects as varied as politics, history of art and economics. I am currently studying for a Masters degree in Geopolitics and Security at Royal Holloway (University of London) before moving on to a PHD.
I have considerable experience in working with young people of a variety of ages, from primary school to A-level in a range of subjects. The interdisciplinary nature of Geography has left me well suited to teach across the breadth of the arts, humanities and social sciences. Whilst at Oxford I was heavily involved in the student recruitment process as the college's JCR Access and Admissions Officer and as a Policy Intern for the University Admissions Office. In this capacity I helped organise open days, interviews, school visits and summer schools, leaving me well qualified to guide students through their applications to Oxbridge and other universities.
My approach to teaching is as much focused around improving the confidence and learning style of a student as it is towards nurturing their academic ability. I am a firm believer that for students to be successful academically they need to be confident to make mistakes and learn from the experience. My tutoring style treats each student personally and is consequently tailored around their individual needs. Similarly, my own experiences, both as a student and a tutor, have taught me that learning is most effective when it is enjoyable. Whether students are suffering anxieties about their progress, low self-confidence or limited willpower, I aim to offer dynamic and engaging teaching sessions that present material in exciting and innovative ways.
