I'm an undergraduate student at the University of Melbourne, studying Data Science. When I'm not hitting the books, I love playing basketball and creating videos. Hello, I'm Owen, and as a native Mandarin speaker with nine years of personal experience living in China, I offer a unique and effective approach to learning the language. My teaching style is designed to be highly interactive and tailored to each student's needs, whether you're just starting or looking to perfect your fluency.
My Teaching Methodology
My tutoring methodology focuses on a balanced mix of conversational practice and foundational skills. I believe that language learning is most effective when it's practical and engaging. We'll start with everyday conversation to build confidence and listening comprehension. From there, we'll dive into formal lessons on grammar, vocabulary, and tones, reinforced with reading exercises and writing practice. Having lived in China, I can also provide cultural insights that make the learning experience richer and more authentic. I'll adapt my techniques to your specific learning style to ensure you get the most out of every lesson.
Typical Lesson Structure
A typical lesson is 60 minutes long, but I am flexible and can adjust based on a student’s concentration level and needs. Each session will include a variety of activities to keep it dynamic and fun. We might begin with a casual chat to warm up and review the previous lesson, followed by new material and guided practice. Lessons are structured but designed to feel natural and unpressured, ensuring steady progress.
My Experience and Qualifications
Mandarin is my first language, and my nine years of living in China provided me with a deep, intuitive understanding of the language. I have past tutoring experience teaching a wide age range, from children as young as 4 to teenagers up to 16 years old. Additionally, my experience teaching adult piano demonstrates my ability to effectively communicate complex topics and guide learners of any age and background toward their goals.
