About Charlotte

I fell in love with tutoring while at the IB when I tutored my classmates in English Lit and Norwegian Lit for 3 years. It was an amazing feeling to have people run up to me and tell me that they had improved by several points - or even grades - since their previous essay after I had spent time with them trying to help. It was then that I realized I wanted to teach. I am currently halfway through a master's in poetry which will result in a teaching certificate. I truly can not wait to make teaching my full time job. Helping people improve their confidence in a classroom setting, and potentially also help develop their love for reading is such a rewarding experience. Literature has been a wonderful force in my life, an emotional outlet I can turn to when I need to destress, an educational tool that informs me of different cultures and historical eras, a source of open mindedness that introduces me to people of all different backgrounds. Literature can accomplish so much, however a large number of people don't have the chance to develop this relationship to the novels, poems or plays that they read, because they have never been taught the correct approach. I hope that I can guide you on your literary journey and teach you how to enjoy reading. And if all else fails - teach you how to not hate studying it.

I am a former IB student who graduated with a 6 in both English Literature (where I got a 7 on the Internal Oral Assessment) and Norwegian Literature (where I got a 7 on Paper Two and the Written Assignment). I received a First and a GPA of 3.75 in English and Creative Writing from the University of Birmingham. I am currently undertaking a 2 year master's at the University of St Andrews, where I will graduate with a teaching certificate.

As a former IB student I understand the mental toll of the course, as well as the most efficient ways to adapt to the challenges that the IB presents. Additionally, while in the IB, it became a habit to tutor my classmates who were struggling. Whether they required help with close reading and making annotations, or organizing their thoughts ahead of writing an essay and holding a presentation, I always had advice. The people I helped consistently went from 4s to 6s. Through them I gained the experience to provide guidance in a patient and respectful manner, and how to communicate with someone who doesn't have as great of an understanding or passion about the subject as I do.

As I am currently a master's student my time schedule is flexible, and I can adapt to classes any time of day, including evenings and weekends. Whether you would like a 30 minute lesson, or a 3 hour one, that is entirely up to you, you will have complete agency when it comes to the frequency and length of the tutorials, as well as exactly what you want taught. My time is currently split 50/50 between Oslo and St Andrews, so having classes online will be the most productive, however I am also happy to conduct classes in person during school term if you live in St Andrews.

Literature is my greatest passion, and there are few people one could come across who could teach with a greater amount of enthusiasm and commitment. Below is a list of works that I am especially familiar with (although I have read and studied plenty beyond this list, and I am also excited to pick up new novels or poems or plays in preparation for tutorials)

"The Bell Jar" and "Ariel" by Plath
"The Stranger", "the Plague" and "the Fall" by Camus (as well as his essays)
"Hunger" and "Pan" by Knut Hamsun
"Othello" by Shakespeare
"War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina" by Tolstoy
"Pride and Prejudice" by Austen
"The White Tiger" by Aravind Adiga
"Crime and Punishment" by Dostoyevsky
"Ghosts" and "A Doll's House" by Ibsen
"Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi
"Farewell my Concubine" by Lillian Lee
"Life of Pi" by Yann Martel
"Death of a Naturalist" by Seamus Heaney
"Cherry Orchard" by Tsjekhov
"Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles
"Odyssey" by Homer
"Animal Farm" by Orwell
"A Room With a View" by Foster
"Franny and Zoey" and "The Catcher in The Rye" by Salinger (I read the latter one so many times I had to duct tape it together by the end of the semester and I accurately predicted which extract from the novel that we would have for our exam)

I can also teach anything and everything that has been written by Virginia Woolf, Audre Lorde and Robert Frost, as well as any novel written from the point of view of an unreliable narrator.
