About Karen
I hold an M.A. in Psychology from New York University and completed doctoral studies (ABD) in Cognitive Psychology at Rutgers University, where my research focused on the effects of acute stress on working memory and cognitive functioning. I subsequently taught undergraduate psychology at Rutgers University and the College of Saint Elizabeth, including courses in Physiological Basis of Behavior, Experimental Psychology, Sensation and Perception, Development Through the Lifespan, and Social Psychology.
My background also includes several years as an Educational Therapist and Learning Specialist, providing individualized academic support in study skills, organization, executive functioning, test preparation, research and academic writing, and individualized learning strategies.
For the past twelve years, I have worked professionally as a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor while continuing to teach extensively. I have developed and taught psychoeducational programming in psychology, neuroscience, addiction, stress, trauma, and behavior change, with an emphasis on making complex information understandable, relevant, and useful.
Across these very different settings, teaching has remained one of the most rewarding parts of my professional life. I approach each student as a whole person and recognize that none of us leaves the rest of our lives at the door when we sit down to learn. My own research examined how acute stress affects working memory, and I understand that stress, competing responsibilities, confidence, and life circumstances can significantly influence someone's ability to concentrate, organize information, retrieve what they know, and perform academically. Sometimes a student who believes, “I'm just not good at this,” needs help recognizing what may actually be getting in the way—and then developing practical strategies for moving through it.
I bring substantial academic and professional experience to my work with students, but also curiosity, patience, humor, and a genuine respect for the different strengths, experiences, and ways of learning each person brings to our work together. My goal is not simply to help students succeed in one course, but to help them understand themselves better as learners and leave with greater confidence in their own ability to learn.

My approach begins with understanding you as a learner—where you're getting stuck, what you already understand, and how you learn best. There is no single “right” way to learn, and I enjoy helping students discover the strategies that work best for them.
In psychology, I focus on helping students understand concepts rather than simply memorize information. I break complex material into understandable pieces, use real-world examples, and help students see connections between ideas. A typical session begins with identifying what you need to accomplish and any areas of confusion, then working through the material together while developing strategies you can use independently.
My background as a university psychology instructor, cognitive psychology researcher, and Educational Therapist/Learning Specialist allows me to bring both subject expertise and an understanding of how learning itself works to our sessions. I have taught students with widely different academic backgrounds and learning styles, and I especially enjoy helping someone move from “I don't understand this” to the moment when the material begins to make sense.
I work with high school, undergraduate, and adult learners seeking support in psychology coursework, including introductory psychology, cognitive psychology, physiological psychology/biological bases of behavior, social psychology, developmental psychology, sensation and perception, and research methods. I can also help students strengthen study strategies, organization, academic writing, test preparation, and the independent learning skills they can carry into other courses.
