About Yiren

The reason why I want to teach is to offer struggling students the help that I never received as a student - there are a multitude of keen and able students who are unable to fulfil the full potential because they are lacking the true academic and wellbeing support that they require, and I believe that my 5+ years of teaching experience has made me qualified to deliver the right guidance to help students to perform at their highest standards

I like to allocate 5-10 minutes at the start of each lesson to cover any particular areas in which the student struggled over the past week. After this, I spend the majority of the lesson consolidating that material in a variety of ways, because I believe that exposure to a concept from many angles boosts understanding. Following on from this, I like to ask the pupil a few questions regarding the material covered to check whether the basic understanding has been established - at this point, I will not ask many in depth questions because it is unfeasible to expect the pupil to take in all the information straight away, so such questions will only serve to intimidate them rather than benefit them. The remainder of the lesson is spent going over any homework or tests/quizzes that the student has completed or struggled with since the last lesson - the aim of this is to understand why the student has faced difficulty, and how I can help with this. Additionally, I like to spend some of this time going over the student's academic achievements (eg. if they did well in a test) because I believe it boosts confidence and allows us to mark out their particular areas of strength. The lesson normally concludes with a short reflection of the week and academic/wellbeing goals for the next week.

Following the lesson, I will write a short reflection regarding the lesson and then decide if the student would benefit from some further homework to complete in their own time. If it is the case that I think some work will benefit their understanding of a difficult topic OR if I think it will help me to understand their particular areas of struggle, then I will search of past paper questions/quizzes on the internet or in revision booklets, and then email it to them. I always like too make clear that these questions or quizzes I set as 'homework' is never compulsory, and should be used by the student if they can find the time, however I do always make clear that I think it will benefit them greatly for them to be done by the next session. If the questions are indeed completed by the student, then there will be time dedicated in the next lesson to going over these questions with the student.
