About Jonathan
I graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2010 with a first-class degree in Mathematics with honours, having previously achieved grade A in Maths, Further Maths and Physics at A level. Since graduating, I have worked full-time as a private maths tutor.
I’ve always enjoyed maths (even if I didn’t always want to admit it!), but what I particularly enjoy about tutoring is finding a way of explaining something that makes sense to the individual student. I aim to be patient, approachable and clear, and to create an atmosphere in which students feel completely comfortable stopping me, asking questions and saying when something hasn’t made sense.
More than fifteen years of feedback from students and parents has reinforced how important those qualities are, although I’m aware that there is always room to improve.
Since leaving university, I have worked with hundreds of students across a wide range of ages and ability levels. These have included primary school students, GCSE and A-level students, and adults studying for qualifications or simply looking to improve their maths.
Much of my work is now focused on GCSE and A-level Maths, and over the years I have taught students with very different starting points and objectives: from those who lack confidence with the fundamentals through to high-attaining students aiming for the top grades.
Alongside my teaching, I have spent many years developing an extensive collection of my own resources. These include carefully sequenced lesson questions, topic worksheets, exam-style and past-paper practice, and detailed worked solutions.

My approach to teaching centres around patience, clarity and adapting the lesson to the individual student. One of the main advantages of one-to-one tuition is that there is no need to move on simply because the rest of a class is ready to do so. If a student needs more time on a particular idea, we can spend that time; equally, if they have understood something quickly, we can move on to more challenging material.
Where possible, I like to work through topics in a carefully structured progression, beginning with the underlying ideas and building towards the more difficult and exam-style questions. The resources I have developed over the years are particularly helpful here, as I can choose questions of an appropriate level and gradually increase the difficulty as the student progresses.
I’m also very happy to revisit topics as often as necessary. Understanding is more important than simply getting through material, and I would much rather spend additional time securing a topic properly than move on while there are still gaps.
I am also happy to push students if I feel they are capable of working at a higher level. Many students underestimate their own ability because the pace or style of their school lessons does not suit the way they learn, only to find that, once they begin one-to-one tuition, they are capable of much more than they had realised.
Finally, I strongly believe that the greatest progress usually comes when regular tuition is combined with some independent work between lessons. I am therefore happy to provide targeted practice or homework from my own resources, particularly where a student would benefit from consolidating a topic before the next lesson.

Jonathan is an excellent maths tutor who has a great understanding of mathematics. He breaks down challenging topics into a very clear and comprehensible way. Jonathan is very friendly and I found his tuition really helpful in improving my ability to tackle difficult concepts and exam questions. I would really recommend Jonathan, his support made a big difference in my understanding of maths and helped me achieve an A at A-level.
Jonathan was always very easy going and professional. His subject knowledge is amazing and he is always happy to share his knowledge- he is even able to make up his own A Maths questions on the spot. Amazing! He prepared lessons based on my needs and always listened to me. He helped my knowledge and confidence grow by being calm and patient. Can’t recommend him enough. Thank you!
Jon has worked with both my teenage children age 16 and 13, on GCSE level maths.
Jon motivates and explains maths in such a way that a child with dyslexia who lacks confidence can effectively learn and thrive and enjoy maths. My son even wanted to do maths in his own time during the weekend to embed his new found skills in readiness for his exams.
My son said he learned more from Jon than he did at school.
I found Jon to be very reasonable and offered some good deals depending on time slots.
At the end of the day my child enjoyed working with Jon who made the subject more accessible and enjoyable, which is exactly what I wanted.
I definitely intended to employ Jon again for my younger child.Jon tutored our son to a successful conclusion in his A level maths exams this year. In all his dealings with him, he was unfailingly patient, supportive, skilled, professional and kind, explaining concepts with ease and shedding light on aspects of the curriculum with which our son had struggled at college. He was especially helpful in the period prior to and during the exams, demonstrating a flexible approach and boosting confidence when it was most needed. Jon's subject knowledge is outstanding and he has the gift of making complex topics accessible for learners. He pitches his explanations at exactly the right level, differentiating learner needs and adapting his approach to suit their learning style. As a lecturer myself, I would not hesitate to recommend Jon to anyone who might benefit from a one to one approach to maths, a subject with which many struggle. My husband and I cannot speak highly enough of him & found him trustworthy and competent throughout the time he visited our home. Our son is now at university and Jon was part of that journey, for which we shall always be grateful.
