  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

English has been part of my life since I was a teenager. I live in Michigan, USA and I also had the chance to study English abroad (in Canada, Scotland and England).
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I do like Homer Simpson, from the American animated sitcom The Simpsons. He is said to be one of the most popular and influential television characters. I like the way the sitcom shows life in the United States. Despite the irony and stereotypes, you can learn a lot about the American culture.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I love Thanksgiving. It’s fantastic to have an annual national holiday to gather together and celebrate our blessings.

  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

English has been part of my life since I was a teenager. My whole life involves English as I live in The United States.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

When it comes to English, pronunciation is quite hard since English is not a phonetic language. I do believe that the more you listen, the better you speak; so, listening is key! Besides, studying phonemics also helps us greatly.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I studied English in Edinburgh, some of my Scottish friends used to “correct” me sometimes. Even though I was not making any mistake in English, I was not saying things the way they did. In other words, I did not speak Scots! And, why is that? Language is a living system. There are so many variations, dialects and different pronunciation. Although I am proficient in English and a native Portuguese speaker, I don’t stop learning new words and expressions or even different accents.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

The language courses I took in Canada, Scotland and England helped me improve my English to a great extent.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I am an experienced Language teacher. Teaching is my job and my passion.
I take teaching seriously, so I’m always asking myself how I can become a more effective teacher. I’m always taking courses, workshops and trips to become a better.

I am patient, professional, punctual and student-centered. I do my best to help my students master the language they are learning in a natural, fun way. Besides, I make sure they also learn about the culture while they are learning the language.

I also try to create a genuine connection with my students. It’s not just about the lessons. I am available 24/7 and provide them lots of extra materials.
