About Darrel
My strongest historical knowledge is in modern European history, particularly the causes and consequences of the First and Second World Wars, treaty analysis, escalation and the early Cold War.
I am especially interested in the point where knowing the content is no longer enough: selecting the right evidence, explaining causation and answering the question that was actually asked.
My wider work involves analysing complex information, identifying patterns and turning evidence into clear conclusions. As a former DVSA examiner, I also understand the importance of applying consistent assessment standards and giving precise feedback. I am currently completing an ILM Level 6 Diploma in Leadership and Management, which includes substantial structured written and presentation work.
A History-specific recommendation on my profile describes my support as carefully planned, well structured and tailored to the student, with detailed feedback that identifies strengths and areas for improvement.
I teach calmly, but I will challenge vague explanations and unsupported claims. The aim is to help students think and write more clearly, not simply memorise more facts.

Lessons are designed around the student's exam board, current topic and the type of question they need to improve.
We may work on:
• building an accurate timeline without getting lost in detail
• explaining causes, consequences and significance
• choosing precise evidence to support an argument
• moving from description to analysis
• interpreting and evaluating historical sources
• planning essays and structured exam responses
• understanding command words and mark schemes
• completing timed practice
• reviewing an answer and identifying the next improvement
I will ask students to explain their reasoning, then help them strengthen the structure and evidence. Feedback is specific: what is already earning marks, what is limiting the answer and what to change next time.
The free 30-minute conversation is for confirming the exam board, topics, current level and priorities. It is not a full teaching or marking session. Where possible, please bring a recent question, answer or teacher feedback to the first paid lesson.

I cannot recommend Darrel highly enough. If you’re considering working with him, give him a try, you won’t be disappointedDarrel has a natural ability to help people look at situations differently and get beyond the surface of a problem.
His approach isn’t about telling someone what they should do or giving them all the answers. Instead, he asks the right questions, challenges assumptions and helps people work through situations for themselves, building confidence in their own decisions along the way.
One of his real strengths is recognising that everyone thinks, communicates and processes information differently. He adapts his approach to the individual rather than expecting the individual to adapt to him, creating an environment that feels supportive, patient and non-judgemental.
He is particularly good at taking situations that feel complicated or overwhelming and breaking them down into something clearer and more manageable. Importantly, he is also willing to challenge someone when needed rather than simply telling them what they want to hear.
I would highly recommend Darrel to anyone looking for an approachable and thoughtful coach who will genuinely listen, challenge their thinking and help them find a way forward that works for them.Darrel is a dedicated and highly organised History teacher who is passionate about helping students achieve their full potential.
