About John
- What kind of experience do you have? I have many years' teaching experience as a specialist English teacher in both state and independent schools and colleges, and have been tutoring for eight years. I work with learners of all abilities and all levels up to Oxford and Cambridge entrance. I have worked with students with individual learning needs such as dyslexia, ADHD and Asperger Syndrome. In addition to my private work, I have tutored 'looked-after' children for a local education authority. I have worked as a GCSE examiner since 2010, and as an 'A' Level examiner since 2016. - Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate? I have an up-to-date enhanced DBS certificate, and subscribe to the annual update service. - Where and with whom did you train? I trained as a teacher at the University of Oxford Department of Education. - Do you belong to any professional organisations? I belong to the Tutors' Association and the National Association for the Teaching of English. - Tell me about some of your current students. K has an unconditional offer from his first-choice university – except for a requirement to pass GCSE English. He is anxious that he will fail, again. He has a great imagination and can respond well to questions on the Writing sections of the GCSE, but lacks confidence in the Reading section, where he was taught mechanistic approaches (PEE, PETER, etc.) at school, which he finds a hindrance, not a help. He needs supportive coaching to build his confidence so he can stop sabotaging himself: he knows what to do, but he doesn't know that he knows. We talk through texts and questions of the sort he will face in June; I encourage K to do most of the talking and to learn to trust his own judgement, while ensuring he recognises what each (predictable) question is asking him to do. We make notes during the session, using a shared Google Doc, and K writes these up into practice answers which I assess using a shared mark scheme. T wants to go to university, and needs to achieve BCC at A Level. He is currently performing around grade D/E in English Literature, his third subject. We identified essay structure as an area for development. We go through T's homework essays, week by week, discussing how he has expressed his ideas and what connections he sees between them. We make some live edits together on Google Docs. I might offer some additional input or refer him to additional resources. He does some further redrafting after the session and I look at the essay again and make some further suggestions (as comments on the shared Doc) before he finalises his essay.

I am happy to start working with you whatever level you are at now. Many students begin with little sense of what they can achieve once they start to believe in themselves. - Which subject(s) do you teach? I teach English Language and English Literature. - Tell me about your qualifications. I am an Oxford graduate with a postgraduate teaching qualification. - How much do you charge? For online tuition and local face-to-face tuition, my fees are £36 for GCSE and £40 for A Level. - Where do you teach? I teach online, and in students' homes in Freshwater, Totland, West Wight and Newport (Isle of Wight). - When are you available? I am normally available "after school" - late afternoon/early evening. I am sometimes available during school hours, and in school holidays, by prior arrangement. - Which ages and levels do you teach? I generally teach young people and adults working towards GCSE or A Level examinations. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for? GCSE, iGCSE and A Level (all examination boards); English Literature Admissions Test (ELAT) - Describe your arrangements for online tutoring. For online tuition, I normally use Skype, email, and Google Docs for live collaboration. - Do you have a personal message for students? Believe in yourself!

I was very lucky to be tutored by John Robinson because our lessons really helped me understand the set texts and unseen poetry in my GCSE syllabus. It certainly contributed to my final exam performance, which was worlds away from my starting point and also far better than my school teachers and predicted grade expected. I went from being a B student to an A* student over the course of my GCSE largely due to the challenging and personal tuition that I received.
We have been extremely fortunate to have had help from John Robinson in tutoring two of our sons in English over the last four years. Both of them have found themselves in English classes dominated by girls and at various stages have lost confidence in their ability to do well at English. John has been able to support and inspire them to excel at English gaining 3A* and an A at GCSE between them. He has been completely reliable in setting work, marking it and providing valuable feedback.
John is a very thorough and organised tutor who has provided our son with useful resources. He is flexible, encouraging and has built our son's confidence so that he believes in his own ability.
