About Poonam

I specialise in helping GCSE maths students who are struggling at grade 3–5 to improve quickly and pass their exams with confidence. Many students find maths confusing, but I focus on breaking topics down into simple steps that actually make sense. My goal is to make maths easy to understand and help students overcome fear and build confidence. I use clear explanations, exam-focused techniques, and regular practice so students can see real improvement in a short time.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My fascination with Mathematics began at a very young age when I realised that unlike other subjects, Maths never lies — every problem has a logical, satisfying solution. As I grew older, I noticed many of my peers struggling with concepts that felt natural to me, and I instinctively started helping them. That organic desire to help others understand Maths eventually grew into a professional passion. Today, teaching Maths both online and offline is not just my profession — it is my purpose.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students.

Mathematics is a universe in itself. I particularly love teaching Number Systems, Algebra, and Geometry because they form the backbone of all advanced Maths. I enjoy showing students the “why” behind every formula rather than just the “how” — because when a student understands why something works, they never forget it. I also love introducing students to mental Maths tricks that boost their speed and confidence instantly. If I had to pick a least favourite — I would say overly abstract theoretical proofs, simply because they can feel disconnected from practical understanding for younger learners.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My greatest inspiration was my school Maths teacher who had an extraordinary ability to make every student feel capable. She once told me — “Maths doesn’t require genius, it requires patience.” Those words stayed with me forever and became the foundation of my entire teaching philosophy. I carry her spirit into every session I conduct — ensuring no student ever feels incapable for not understanding something the first time.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

In my experience, five qualities are non-negotiable. First, patience — because every student’s pace is different. Second, adaptability — to explain the same concept in multiple ways. Third, empathy — to understand a student’s fear and frustration. Fourth, strong fundamentals — you cannot teach what you don’t deeply understand yourself. Fifth, the ability to inspire — because grades improve when students begin to believe in themselves. A good tutor doesn’t just transfer knowledge — they transform mindsets.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my most memorable students came to me completely defeated — she had failed her Maths exam twice and told me on our very first session, “I think my brain just doesn’t work for Maths.” Instead of diving straight into formulas, I spent the first session simply understanding where her fear began. We started from absolute basics and slowly rebuilt her confidence step by step. Three months later, she called me in happy tears because she had not only passed but scored 78%. That moment is why I teach. That moment is what makes every challenging session worth it.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

The greatest challenge I face repeatedly is Maths anxiety — a very real psychological barrier that prevents students from even trying. Many students arrive having been told at some point that they are “bad at Maths” and they have believed it ever since. Breaking that belief requires far more than just good teaching — it requires rebuilding their entire relationship with the subject. Another challenge is weak foundational knowledge in students studying advanced topics. My approach is always to pause, go back to the root, and rebuild — no matter how long it takes.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion, simply put, is transformation. I am passionate about taking a student who dreads Maths and turning them into someone who actually enjoys it. There is no greater professional reward than that. On a personal level, I love logic puzzles, mental arithmetic challenges, and constantly finding new creative ways to explain mathematical concepts. I believe a tutor who stops learning eventually stops growing — so I am always evolving.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof?

What truly makes me a Superprof is that I don’t just teach Maths — I teach students. I take time to understand each individual’s personality, pace, fears, and goals before designing a personalised learning path for them. I teach both online and offline, ensuring flexibility and accessibility for every type of learner. My sessions are not about rushing through a syllabus — they are about building deep, lasting understanding. But above all, what makes me a Superprof is that I genuinely care. Every student’s success feels like my own, and that emotional investment is what drives me to give my absolute best in every single session.
