About Gerard
- What kind of experience do you have?
I am a qualified teacher and A-Level Maths Examiner. I have achieved top grades and could help you do the same.
I have been tutoring A-Level students of Edexcel, OCR, OCR MEI and AQA for three years now, as well as students of IB Maths. I have tutored A-Level students from schools including Westminster School, Eltham College, Colfe's, St. Dunstan's, Dulwich College and the Kent Grammar Schools. I have tutored younger students from schools including City of London and Bromley High, and have helped younger children excel at entrance exams to Westminster School, City of London, Trinity College and Victoria College (Jersey). I have also tutored my own son, a Mensan currently at Westminster School, from an early age.
I have always loved the challenge of tests and joined Mensa and the ISPE accordingly. As such, I see admissions tests as enjoyable challenges rather than sources of stress. I would hope to help you see your entrance exams in the same light.
I also love chess, and can teach the internationally recognised Steps Method to get children started on a firm foundation. With my help, my has won School Chess Prizes.
I also love poetry.

I am a qualified teacher who has achieved top grades and could help you do the same. I specialise in A-Level Maths, for which I am an Examiner, and tutees appreciate my ability to communicate my understanding.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I also seem to be popular as a general 11+/13+ tutor. As a member of IQ Societies, and having helped my young son gain entrance to Mensa and Westminster School, and win School Chess Trophies, parents seem to have particular confidence in me in this area.
For 11+/13+, I provide book-based teaching rather than assessment. I select books in agreement with parents, and then impart my knowledge and understanding to children as I review their homework. However, I do not agree with the modern emphasis on continual assessment. I do not believe that an object gets heavier the more times you weigh it.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
PGCE Maths (incl. QTS) at Masters Level (2014)
Diplomas in Maths (2001), Statistics (2002) & Economics (2003)
MBA specialising in Finance from City University (1990)
BSc(Eng) ACGI 1st Class Honours from Imperial College (1984)
6 Top Grade A Levels: Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, Physics (1981), Pure Maths, Statistics (2003)
6 Top Grade AS Levels: Pure Maths, Statistics, Mechanics, Economics (2003), Maths, Further Maths (2014)
Top Grade GCSE Maths (2013)
Member of Mensa (No. 173581) and the ISPE (No. 1251) (2001)
- How much do you charge?
I am currently charging £30 per hour for lessons at my home or online. I give a half-price trial hour. I do not travel away from my home.
- When are you available?
Because I am just returning to tutoring, I am available at most times.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I seem to fill a niche with younger students working towards 11+ and 13+ general entrance exams.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
7+, 8+, 11+, 13+, Common Entrance.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I offer online tutoring via Zoom, for the same price as in-person.

Gerard helped my daughter prepare for her GCSE Exams at the City of London School for Girls, and she achieved an A* for both Maths and Additional Maths. Gerard is now helping my daughter with her A Level Maths at Westminster School, to ensure she achieves a top grade with that too, as well as her place at Oxbridge (following in my footsteps).
Gerard tutored me throughout my Maths and (challenging) Further Maths A Levels, helping me achieve the grades I needed. He was able to help with the most difficult topics; even in C4 and FP2, where he was able to give me an understanding of the concepts and approaches to tackling exam questions. Thank you Gerard.
Gerard tutored me throughout my A Level Maths course, and I would recommend him highly. Early on, he helped build my confidence with his patience and ability to adapt his explanations. As exams approached he helped me complete every past question, so I had the best possible preparation. I am now studying at University and Gerard even continues to help me online when I get stuck. So you don't need to worry.
Son: Gerard is excellent and also humble. He has helped me a lot with my Year 12 Maths. My confidence has increased because he has taught me different methods to solve problems and, one-to-one, I can understand every step.
Father: I chose Gerard because of his impressive CV, and I made the right decision. Gerard has been completely reliable and completely honest. Most importantly, my son is happy, so we look forward to continuing with Gerard in Year 13.While qualifying for his PGCE, Gerard was an outstanding maths teacher. Hi subject knowledge is second to none, and he is able to explain concepts in terms which all can understand. Many GCSE and A Level students achieved A's and A*'s with his help.
Our pupils really appreciate Gerard's no-nonsense approach when they need to prepare for their all-important GCSE's, A Levels and Entrance Exams. He knows what is necessary and is able to communicate this very effectively.
I was Gerard mentor for placements at Oasis Academy Shirley Park. Gerard completed his PGCE placement successfully teaching keystage 3 and 4, students in maths.
During Gerard’s student teaching experience, he was highly motivated to learn as much as he could and perform to his best capacities.
He asked for feedback on a daily basis and accepted constructive criticism. He understood his limitations as an inexperienced teacher and observed experienced teachers closely in order to improve his own teaching abilities.
Gerard has several strengths but his main strength, from my observations, is his ability to motivate students. He always seemed sincerely interested in their progress.
Gerard recognised when a student needed special assistance or attention. For his course assignment, he focussed on two students with special educational needs. His project and several elements he identified, has since gone on to allow us to make significant improvements to those students learning.
In summary, Gerard displayed the qualities that make a teacher successful. He is dependable, motivated, adaptable and is in tune with the needs of his students. He works well with all of his colleagues and is able to learn from those around him. I highly recommend him for a teaching or tutoring position.View more recommendations
