My tutoring approach focuses on empowering students through personal and differentiated instruction, understanding the student’s specific areas of need, and encouraging the process of advocating for one’s self. During our initial consultation, I like to take some time to understand and get to know the student, their interests, and where they feel they need the most support. The student will then be assessed to determine their strengths and needs in the selected area of study.
Goal Setting
I develop specific measurable goals for each student that are tailored to the data collected from their intake assessment. I typically like to give students 2-3 academic goals, and at least 1 cognitive functioning/work habits goal. We will begin the first lesson by reviewing their goals together, to ensure that the student understands what they will be working toward during the lessons to come.
The student’s goal(s) will be measured via progress monitoring, and data collection. These points of data may come from class assessments, and/or their independently completed homework. Unlike academic goals, progress monitoring for the student’s work habits goal(s) will come directly from class observation. Throughout the session cycle I will review the student’s progress toward their goals with the student and their parent(s). At these times we will discuss whether we feel that the student’s goals are still appropriate to work toward, or if we would like to make amendments to any goals before the end of the student’s session cycle.
What to expect during a lesson
During a typical lesson, we will begin with a quick check-in. How did they feel while completing the homework? Were there any concepts that they had difficulty with? These questions will be addressed first, then we will review the remainder of their homework together. The student will submit the homework for data collection.
The next block of time will be a lesson with instruction tailored to their specific area of need. Next, guided practice will be administered. Following this, the student will independently complete a practice assignment to check for understanding. Once completed, we will review the practice assignment together in order to give the student immediate feedback. Weekly homework will be assigned at the close of each lesson to ensure concept retention.
Student homework
Typically, homework will be a concise assignment that reviews concepts introduced during our session. Student homework may vary from week to week depending on their specific goals.
For example,
If the student’s goal is in the area of written expression, they would typically be assigned a writing prompt to complete independently. They would then bring their response to review with me during our following. As we review the assignment, I would give the student feedback on their writing and they may make those revisions to their assignment at home for that week’s homework.
If the student’s goal is in the area of understanding concepts of grammar, and they have just had a lesson on identifying prepositional phrases, the homework assigned may have a section of 3-5 questions identifying prepositional phrases within a sentence, and a 3-5 question section, where they would apply their knowledge, and write their own example sentences that include labeled prepositional phrases.
