About Sofia
My name is Sofia Yepes, and I am a Colombian-American currently based in Brooklyn, NY. I have a Bachelor's Degree in International Studies from Boston College, and a bi-lingual International Baccalaureate Diploma in Spanish. I have experience tutoring beginner to intermediate-level Spanish speakers. I lived in Madrid, Spain, where I attended classes at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas, where I took classes on international relations and Spanish politics. I grew up abroad for the majority of my life, living in countries such as Thailand and Kuwait, and so I have a deep appreciation for media and language from all over the world.

When it comes to teaching I love using mixed-media to not only improve language skills, but also to learn about Hispanic culture. I like to use a combination of short films, written excerpts, podcasts, and conversation to teach students how to speak and understand Spanish, both colloquially and properly. I intend to teach beginner to intermediate speakers.
A typical lesson will start out with 15 minutes of pure conversation, ranging from different topics to expand vocabulary. Depending on the focus on the student, we will either watch a short film to highlight new vocabulary words and practice reading comprehension, or read written excerpts aloud to practice speaking. I am a firm believer than Spanish is best learnt through speaking, so the majority of the class will be focused on speaking (customizable to the student, of course). I will end each class with a list of media recommendations to further improve Spanish (podcast episodes, tv shows, music, and literature).
