Lessons for elementary to middle school students
Typical lesson plan:
Lesson Title: something simple but clear
Objective: what students need to be able to do after they have completed the lesson. “Students will (verb)…” is often a good beginning. (Don’t write “Students will be able to do x,” though; there’s no need for “be able to.” Just write “Students will do x.”) Examples: Students will add 3 single-digit numbers; students will identify adjectives in a text; students will explain the water cycle.
Materials: list pretty much any materials that the students will need, other than pencils, writing paper, and a whiteboard/chalkboard together with dry-erase markers/chalk, which are always assumed.
Activate Prior Knowledge/Focus Attention: A quick game, a set of questions, or another simple activity that helps introduce the lesson. For instance, in a lesson about money, ask kids to name some items they’ve bought in stores, and tell how they paid for those items. Or in a lesson about geographical landforms, ask students to think of words that describe the land where they live (flat, hilly, dry…). Or a game of Hangman using a key term they already know, or…
Teach/Model: A clear and detailed description of the plan to introduce the concept of the lesson. This is sometimes known as the “I do” section of the lesson. (Nothing to do with marriage…)
Guided Practice: Extending the teach/model part and having kids continue what I did with guidance. It’s the “We do” part of the lesson. This does need to be interactive, because kids are do something here.
Practice: This activity should follow directly from the guided practice and teach/model sections. It’s the “You do” section of the lesson, so children are now “doing” without direct help from the instructor. Kids can work independently, in pairs, or in small groups, whatever works best and is appropriate/doable given the setting (but be sure to specify). The teacher will observe and redirect as needed.
Wrap Up: This section lists questions and topics for discussion; it should tie together the main ideas of the lesson and help ensure that they have reached the goals of the lesson. It serves to, well, wrap up what students have done and focus them on the work one last time.
Assess: A way to check how well kids have learned this material. Pencil and paper, activity, discussion, observation, interview...
