I wish wholeheartedly that all my students would understand this concept. I strive to inculcate the desire to work hard in order to excel and succeed. At best, I achieve mixed results. Students are human beings just like professors are. Very few of us prefer hard work to easy work. I know that in their earlier schooling in India, where I live, they were asked to do only two things: rote memorization and problem-solving drill according to the prescribed steps. So, when I ask them to do things for the first time, such as write a book review or make a speech, they are often reluctant to try. They default to shortcuts that have worked for them in the past, such as copy-pasting from the Internet, or they choose an easier question to answer instead of the one I assign to them. I explain over and over that they must change their attitudes and their behavior. Instead of thinking and behaving like students, they must think and act like professionals. That is the only way they will be ready for their careers after they leave school. Some of them get the idea immediately. For others, it takes one, two, or three years. Others never seem to grasp the concept.
