About Paul

I trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and was awarded the Gold Medal upon graduation. Since leaving Guildhall I have worked as an actor for nearly 20 years. In theatre I have worked for the RSC, playing a leading role in Webster's Duchess of Malfi, as well as several seasons at Shakespeare's Globe. I've travelled the world with my work, shooting a feature film in Brazil and have recently completed filming all six episodes as the guest lead in series 3 of the Finnish crime drama Arctic Circle. When not working as an actor I have worked as a mentor to young people with special educational needs and behavioural issues. This role requires great empathy and patience and has taught me how to coach people through some of the more challenging moments in their lives.

The relationship between the student and the tutor should be forged around trust and respect. To act is to be courageous and courage will make you fly. It's my aim to help the student free themselves from the natural doubts and negativity that can so easily creep in during any creative process. I will always encourage the freedom to fail. Through failure we grow. There's no such thing as the 'right answer' when it comes to acting. For me it's about trying different ideas, never censoring ourselves, pushing through difficulties, all achieved through the mutual trust and respect I mentioned earlier. In preparation for drama school auditions I will help you pick the speeches that I think suit you best and decode the mysteries that I wish I had known when I was auditioning all those years ago. Entrance to drama school is an incredibly competitive field and can cause a huge level of stress and anxiety but through the work we do you can get to a place where you're in control and empowered to succeed. Drama schools are looking for you to be you. But getting to that point can be harder than it seems. This is aim of these sessions If you have an audition/self tape for a professional job I will spend the time with you breaking the scenes down and applying a variety of techniques and methods. We will work imaginatively, coming up with many different ways to play the scene.

  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I've long wanted the opportunity to pass on my experience and knowledge to young people looking for a way into the acting profession. The problem was always knowing where to start looking. Superprof has provided me with platform to share my skills.

During the pandemic I started to mentoring young people who were facing all kinds of great need. Nothing related to acting or performance, more as someone who could provide support and friendship. When you see an individuals self esteem improve you realise how vital you can be in somebody else's journey.

I've been passionate about being an actor for over 20 years. When I was starting out I would always seek out those who'd walked some of the road ahead.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

I really admire the work made by Alexander Zeldin.
  • What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

You have to brave and curious. Paying attention to others and taking on notes and direction is vital. Even if you disagree with the advice. This is all part of the process. Most of the time it can feel like you're pushing a boulder up a hill but it's all worth it when something magical happens.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Keep the faith! Trust in your talent and stay committed to the work.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

To be passionate in your work is to have a relentless energy. Time disappears when you're doing something you love. I think most of us know the alternative to that.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

I recently finished filming on a Nordic crime drama in Finland. By normal circumstance I was taken out of my comfort zone. However I felt so fortunate to be doing it. I can watch it back and congratulate myself that I'm not terrible in it!
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

Of course! Whats most enjoyable is when a student surprises themselves. They're the ones doing it, I'm just guiding them along
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

Always make the student feel supported. Really try and get on with them, establish a relationship whereby they feel confident to take risks. If you can create an environment where a persons self esteem has been boosted then you've succeeded.
