About Kara
Yoga began as part of Kara’s daily workout regimen until a moving experience in Savasana led her to understand that her thoughts, rather than her true Self, had taken charge of her life. Since that experience, Kara has committed herself to better understanding the union of mind and body through a disciplined yoga and meditation practice. Kara’s practice on the mat has taught her how to integrate balance into her daily life. While challenging asanas has gifted her with life lessons of perseverance, patience, and emotional strength, restful poses have led her to acknowledge the beauty of release, noticing the present moment, and self-care. She is passionate about guiding others to their personal balance and growth by offering yoga practices that will challenge yet restore.
Kara graduated from Bloom Yoga Studio’s Hatha 200-hour teacher training program (Chicago) in June of 2018 and received her Masters of Social Work from Northeastern IL University (Chicago) in May of 2020. She has eight years of experience working within the mental health field, including refugee resettlement and community mental health. She is currently working as a therapist with young people between the ages of six and twenty who have experienced community violence. She is also currently aiming towards becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker by February of 2022. She believes yoga’s union of mind and body, its invitation to draw inwards for personal guidance, and its ability to create personal awareness can be a meaningful form of self-healing for those in need.

Balance is what drives my personal practice and what inspires my yoga sequence for others. I believe that the balancing of the autonomic nervous system can lead to improvements in both physical and emotional/mental healing. The autonomic nervous system consists of the sympathetic (fight-or-flight response) and parasympathetic (rest and digest). Unfortunately, our culture is a culture of stress meaning our sympathetic nervous system is constantly being triggered sending a continuous stream of stress hormones throughout the body. Some of us are fortunate enough to have access to safe and stress free environments allowing our bodies to rebalance itself through activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. However, many of us do not have such welcoming and calming spaces.
Yoga is an invitation to step away from the stressors of daily living and enter into a space of safety and support. A 60 or 75-minute class with me offers individuals an opportunity to begin each class with 3-5 minutes of mindfulness through guided meditation or breathing techniques. The movement portion of the class involves a flowing sequence with accessible poses that invite awareness to the body, gently challenges individuals mentally and physically, and balances such challenges with restful and restorative poses. The final portion of the class involves 10-15 minutes of final resting pose or Savasana during which individuals are invited to find a comfortable, restful position and draw their awareness inwards. When available, props (blocks, blanket, bolster, strap) are creatively incorporated to deepen one's experience with a pose. By creating a routine awareness of one’s emotional and physical states throughout the yoga practice, this awareness can influence the ways in which individuals interact with the stressors of daily living.
