Find out more about Lim Hong

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I developed a passion for music at a young age when I first started learning the piano. I was fascinated by how a simple melody could express emotions and tell a story. Over the years, the piano became my favourite instrument because of its versatility and ability to create both beautiful solo music and rich accompaniments.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I enjoy a wide range of music, but I never get tired of listening to classical piano works by composers such as Frédéric Chopin and Ludwig van Beethoven. I also enjoy modern film soundtracks and contemporary piano music, which often inspire my teaching and playing.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

One of the most rewarding courses I can teach is helping students develop musical expression and interpretation. Learning the correct notes is only the beginning; understanding phrasing, dynamics, and emotion is what transforms a performance into music. Guiding students through this process is both challenging and incredibly fulfilling.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Every instrument has its own challenges, but I believe the violin is one of the most difficult to master. Unlike the piano, there are no fixed keys to guide pitch, so players must develop exceptional ear training, precision, and control to produce a beautiful tone consistently.
  • What are your keys to success?

Consistency, patience, and a growth mindset. I encourage students to focus on steady improvement rather than perfection. Small, regular practice sessions and a positive attitude often produce better results than occasional long practice sessions.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

    * Frédéric Chopin – to understand how he created such expressive and timeless piano works.
    * Ludwig van Beethoven – to learn about his perseverance and creativity despite immense challenges.
    * Hans Zimmer – to discuss how music can enhance storytelling and emotion in film.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

One of the most memorable lessons I learned was that mistakes are often the best teachers. During a performance, I once missed a section I had practised countless times. Instead of stopping, I continued confidently and finished the piece. The audience hardly noticed, and it taught me that resilience and musical flow are often more important than perfection.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I tailor every lesson to the student’s learning style and goals. I focus not only on technique and note-reading but also on building confidence, creativity, and a genuine love for music. I create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and celebrating their progress. My goal is to help every student enjoy the journey of learning music while developing strong musical foundations.
