Hey there. My name is Riley and I have been playing competitive chess for over 9 years. I would love the opportunity to tutor beginners all the way to club players on chess fundamentals and strategy.

About Riley
Chess has helped me both in my personal life in areas such as strategic thinking, patience, visualization and confidence as well as given me opportunitys I wouldn't have had otherwise to travel the country and meet/play other people in the game I love. I have played at tournament level since 2013 after being taught by my father and during that time I have achieved a number of important milestones including
. Captain and top player of our highschool team that won the south island interschool championship 3 years in a row
. Otago/southland under 20s champion in 2015, 2016 and 2019
. South Island rapid champion 2020
. Top 70 players in the country
. Current NZ chess rating of 2032
. Wrote a fortnightly chess article for the Otago Daily Times
And while all of these achievements mean a lot to me and the end of the day I play chess because I love it and if some of my love for the game rubs off on anyone else then I've done my job :-)

I always say chess is 80 percent pattern recognition and 20 percent calculation, that's why the most effective way to improve is to play. I will start off by playing you in a game to gauge your skill level in our first lesson. This way between lessions I can create an improvement plan on specific areas of your game that need work. I am open to discussion on length of lessons desired and am happy to teach any age and any skill level from beginner to club player or from unrated to around 1800 elo. Please note this will be my entry to private tutoring and prices will reflect that but I have tutored groups before both in a club setting and less formal to people I know.
