About Riannon
I’m a fully qualified teacher (PGCE and QTS) and highly experienced English specialist, GCSE examiner and former Head of Department with over 12 years’ experience in UK and international education.
I have taught English Language and Literature across GCSE, A-Level and IB programmes, including five years at an international school in the Netherlands, alongside experience as a KS4 Coordinator and subject leader. This will also be my 10th academic year examining AQA GCSE English Literature, giving me detailed insight into how students’ work is assessed and what distinguishes a competent response from an exceptional one.
At GCSE and International GCSE, I support students across the major exam boards, including AQA, Pearson Edexcel, Cambridge International (CAIE), OCR and WJEC.
I work with students across the ability range: from those aiming for Grades 8-9 who want to develop genuinely sophisticated analysis and writing, to students working around the Grade 4/5 boundary who need clear, structured teaching to make everything finally click.
My teaching is rigorous, encouraging and highly responsive to the individual student. I’m particularly interested in helping students understand why an interpretation works, how to turn good ideas into high-quality analytical writing, and what specifically is preventing them from reaching the next grade.
Most importantly, I want students to become increasingly independent. The goal isn’t simply to produce a better essay with me beside them - it’s to give them the knowledge, strategies and confidence to produce one themselves.

My lessons are built around a simple principle: effective tutoring begins by identifying exactly what is preventing a student from progressing - and teaching them how to overcome it.
I don’t rely on generic worksheets, rigid formulas or memorised model answers. Every lesson is shaped around the individual student: their examination board, texts, current attainment, learning profile and goals. We might closely analyse an unseen poem, deconstruct an exceptional response, transform a piece of writing sentence by sentence, practise tackling an unfamiliar exam question, or diagnose why an essay is repeatedly reaching the same mark band.
As an experienced AQA GCSE English Literature examiner across both Paper 1 and Paper 2, I bring detailed knowledge of assessment objectives, mark schemes and what genuinely distinguishes responses across the mark bands. I teach students how to apply that understanding independently, while preserving the originality and intellectual curiosity that the strongest English responses require.
I have extensive experience supporting neurodivergent students and students with SEND, including learners who struggle with processing, organisation, working memory, confidence or translating sophisticated verbal ideas into written responses. I adapt pace, scaffolding, modelling and lesson structure accordingly. The aim is never to lower the intellectual challenge, but to make that challenge accessible - finding the route into the subject that works for the individual student.
Lessons may include close analysis of Literature texts and unseen poetry; English Language reading and writing; essay planning and structure; developing perceptive and conceptual interpretations; analytical writing; creative and transactional writing; examination technique; timed practice; detailed feedback on existing work; and targeted preparation for particular papers or questions.
I work across a wide range of starting points. For ambitious students targeting Grades 8-9, lessons can focus on conceptual thinking, interpretative independence, precision and the sophistication required at the highest levels. For students who find English difficult or overwhelming, I break complex skills into clear, manageable stages and build towards increasingly independent application.
Tuition can be regular and developmental or highly targeted: a weekly programme building skills over time, intensive preparation before examinations, focused intervention in a particular area, or expert feedback on existing work. Where useful, I also provide purposeful independent work so that progress continues between lessons.
Ultimately, my goal is independence. I don’t want a student to write an excellent essay only when I am sitting beside them. I want them to understand what they are doing, why it works, and how to reproduce that quality under examination conditions for themselves.
You won’t receive a generic lesson pulled from a tutoring bank. You’ll receive expert teaching designed around the student in front of me.
