About Clare

I began studying Japanese in high school, and studied abroad in Japan for six months in high school and one year during university. After receiving my M.A. in Japanese, I worked in a Japanese government office for 2 years as a translator/interpreter before returning Stateside. During the academic year, I work as a Japanese teacher for an online middle/high school, and I offer a small number of tutoring slots year-round. Some students come to me just for summer tutoring to hear a different perspective from their regular Japanese teacher in school.

About the lesson

I have a flexible teaching style that suits the student's needs and learning style as much as possible. While I believe that immersion and comprehensible input are the ultimate keys to language learning, I see those methods as independent work on the part of the student. What I can provide my students is detailed guidance on how to use language in a natural way, as well as evaluation of their written and spoken output. If you come to me as a complete beginner, our first step will be to learn the Hiragana and Katakana writing systems and some simple vocabulary, such as greetings and self-introductions. If you come to me already knowing some Japanese, I will evaluate your ability in our first lesson, and we will come up with a study plan that suits your needs and interests! You will never be faced with a "one size fits all" approach in my classes. If you are the kind of student who appreciates a textbook and workbook, I have many suggestions. If you are more tech-oriented, I can recommend apps and websites, too. And if you prefer to study completely independently, and come to me with your questions each week, I'm delighted to help. Classes for ages 12 and up are usually 1 hour. For younger students, 30- or 45-minute sessions are recommended.

Clare has been teaching my wife and I Japanese since early 2020. We have really enjoyed the classes. She pushes us continuously and tailors the teaching to our schedule, skill set, and goals. It's been valuable having a teacher who understands the struggle of learning Japanese from English, as she has created approaches for better understanding components of the language that native speakers would struggle to explain because they know it so intuitively.
She deeply understands the nuances of the language, as well as its idioms and differences between written and spoken vocabulary.
Clare has worked with us through several textbooks, and we are excited to start working through light novels and manga when we finish Genki 2.
