About Emma
Having taught and tutored for many moons, my forte in German is helping you to become increasingly fluent, babbling without inhibition and with grammar sneakily brought in to support your comprehension. For KS3, GCSE, A Level and beyond, I’m adept at raising levels of linguistic articulation and nurturing students to access higher grade boundaries. My results have been excellent and many of my students have chosen German and English as their fields of study in Higher Education. I particularly enjoy helping students with wobbles and students oozing confidence achieve more in these sessions than perhaps ever in a classroom, simply by building confidence, removing stumbling blocks and making them believe they can indeed do it. As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Authority, I am also adept at helping students write powerfully persuasive personal statements.

Former head of department and current lecturer and tutor, I offer one-to-one tailored sessions to boost confidence and achievement in a relaxed but pacey and engaging environment, with a wealth of resources and tips to promote success. I teach hourly both from my home and online, and my mission has always been to make learning fun whilst ensuring maximum progress. Aiming to match individual learning styles to my sessions, I am able to cater for all ages and abilities, from beginners to advanced, striving to support everyone, whether frustratingly baffled or an aspiring boffin. My resources are specifically tailored to engage students and learners from all walks of life; whether your interest is curriculum-based or simply for personal edification and fun, I can marry the sessions with materials focusing on music, literature, contemporary affairs, art, sport, journalism, gastronomy and more - be it Bach, Brecht or die Brücke.

Emma is a wonderful teacher and I highly recommend her. I was a student of hers for several years and she gave me an excellent grounding in German which has allowed me to converse freely with my husband's family in Germany. Last year I had the wonderful experience of going to a wedding in Germany and being able to talk to the other guests with confidence.
Emma was very thoughtful in her choice of material and chose things that interested me greatly. She also customised the lessons to be in line with exactly what I needed and wanted. I particularly enjoyed learning about German culture and found this to give me a better understanding of what was going on during my visits to Germany.
Emma is very professional, friendly and thoughtful and her lessons have helped me massively.
Thank you again, Emma!
I have known Emma for over eight years, both as a colleague and as a language professional, and I can recommend her without hesitation as an outstanding tutor.
What I appreciate most about Emma's teaching is her ability to create a supportive and engaging learning environment. She is patient, encouraging, and exceptionally skilled at adapting her teaching to the needs and abilities of each student.
Over the years, we have worked together on a number of language-learning initiatives and have shared a commitment to helping students achieve their goals. I have seen first-hand the dedication she brings to her teaching and the genuine interest she takes in her students' progress. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that learners feel confident, motivated, and supported.
Emma combines deep subject knowledge with excellent communication skills and a warm, approachable personality.
I would recommend Emma to any prospective student looking for a knowledgeable, professional, and inspiring tutor.Emma was recommended by a teacher to help my son Teddy with his GCSE English . Emma was patient, kind and fun and Teddy used to look forward to the sessions. Being dyslexic English was always going to be a challenge but he passed both English exams with a high level 6 in both . I am certain this would not have been the case without Emma’s help.
As an older (over 40) student, I had many reservations about going 'back to school' to get my German up to a level I could communicate with. I was off to Germany with work for a few months and needed to get by on my own. I had 12 weeks to prepare. At work in Stuttgart, nearly all the engineers spoke English, but obviously, that wasn't the case when going shopping or getting public transport. Having studied German years before to GCSE, I had a rudimentary knowledge of the grammar and some vocab left over, but not much. Emma helped me no end, and I found her teaching style very engaging. She immediately put me at my ease. Her language and cultural knowledge of Germany is encyclopedic, and I quickly gained confidence and started to speak sentences. Instead of a standardized exam course, we role-played everyday scenarios constantly, throwing in different vocabulary and ways of saying or asking the same thing. Within a week of being in Germany, I was using all the stuff we had role-played and starting to have real conversations in German with my work colleagues. I did find learning it again a bit hard, to be honest, but the grounding and foundation role-play work we did was probably the most helpful thing for a business-type student to learn. I cannot recommend Emma highly enough. A superb teacher who made even my mistakes fun.
Emma tutored my daughter for many years. She taught her English to A Level and German to GCSE level. She was consistently very positive, supportive, thorough and professional with her approach. She went above and beyond with her teaching. My daughter always looked forward to her lessons. Thank you so much!
Emma has been my A-Level English Literature tutor for over 5 months and every lesson has been informative and helpful. She is always on time, understanding and encouraging. Her level of knowledge and expertise is clearly shown through the feedback that I look forward to after every essay I write. Would recommend to anyone looking for a tutor that fits the above description!
