About Jullieta

I am a geoscientist, specializing in mineralogy, geochemistry and its petrological applications. My primary interests are chemistry and structure of minerals as tools for understanding their origin, the record of geological processes they contain and possible techniques for fingerprinting. These interests have led me to do extensive work on the characterization of minerals, with a view to understand their microscopic, crystallochemical, color-compositional and spectroscopic properties. More recently, I have engaged in research aimed at the refinement of a micro-X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) technique for the in-situ analysis of bromine in rock forming minerals, which is the first of its kind for analysis of sub-ppm levels of bromine.
I address scientific questions by integrating multidisciplinary approaches including visual, microscopic, geochemical and petrological techniques. I have developed a great appreciation for the applications of mineralogy to petrology and geochemistry as tools to access magmatic processes within large layered intrusions, their implications for mineralisation, to quantify geochemical processes and to investigate the fundamental chemical and physical processes that control magma evolution. I have the propensity to use these tools to investigate the physical and chemical evolution of magmatic systems and their relationship to the formation of mineral deposits. Scientifically, I thirst for avenues to foster understanding on the geochemical tracers of earth’s evolution as well as the innovative applications of petrological, textural, geochemical, and isotopic measurements relevant to crystallization, differentiation and solidification of magmas within magma chambers; and I have no reservations against fostering this science in an academic, corporate or policy environment.

My ultimate goal is to foster students' passions and curiosity. I have found that the best way for me to encourage such curiosity and enthusiasm is to root my classroom in inquiry-based learning. Students tend to learn fundamental concepts better when they know they will soon be asked to apply them to problems they find important and relevant. As a lecturer, I should be able to attend to my students’ personal and academic needs whenever needed. In addition, I should try to create a comfortable learning environment based on respect instead of fear. In order to achieve that, I must build strong rapport with my students so that all of us can learn in a conducive and fun environment. Likewise, communication is apparently an important key to an effective teaching and learning process in the academic setting. My students should be my main priority and I am aware that each of them has different level of proficiency in English language. I believe that by creating a student-centred learning, my students will be able to take charge of their own learning with minimal supervision. This will inculcate a sense of responsibility in them in terms of achieving their learning goal.
