About Eric
MA English Language Teaching (Distinction)
Twenty-five years of teacher/training experience.
Seven years university English teaching experience delivered to English Teaching, Translation and Business Studies undergraduates.
I worked with Arizona State University, in the USA, to adapt and deliver their English Academic Writing programmes to Chinese undergraduates!
I am a British Council trained IELTS Speaking & Writing examiner, and have conducted over 1,000 Speaking tests and marked over 1,300 Writing tests.
Four years IELTS teaching experience - two years at two universities.
I have taught one to one, and one to sixty plus classes and my approach is the same for both. The lesson has to capture the attendee(s) interest. Therefore my first goal is to make it as interesting as possible, which is not always easy, and sometimes, with some topics, quite impossible!
When I was at school and university a subject was of more interest, and thus easier to learn if the teacher enjoyed teaching it, as they could bring it to life, and engage their audience. Reading from a textbook, therefore, has never been my approach!
A good class also requires a good student(s), by which I mean it is not possible to deliver useful training if the person being taught is not interested in learning. Therefore, I always try to establish the students level of motivation!
My IELTS Speaking and Writing training is very different from most others. I do not do repeat and memorise questions and answers, but instead, focus on providing students with a detailed understanding of what the examiner is looking for and how the testing rules actually work.
I want my students to avoid the usual pitfalls and mistakes that cause problems for the majority of IELTS candidates in Writing and Speaking.
I originally trained as a lawyer, so my first degree is in Law. I then spent several years in sales and marketing, before eventually becoming the Training Manager for an IBM agency. My work in the IT training industry has taken me all over the world, from Asia to Africa, the Middle East & North America.
Prizes and Scholarships :
Presented a paper on Critical Pedagogy in the Language Classroom at the 7th British Universities Postgraduate Research Conference in 2009.
