About Hnata
Hi, I’m Hinata, a Mechanical Engineering student at Imperial College London and a native Japanese-English bilingual speaker. I have lived and studied in both Japan and the UK, so I understand both the language itself and the cultural differences that can make Japanese challenging for English speakers.
I enjoy helping students feel more confident, whether they are complete beginners, exam students, or simply learning Japanese for travel, work, or personal interest. I previously taught beginner Japanese in a school setting, and I aim to make lessons clear, friendly, and enjoyable.
Outside academics, I enjoy calligraphy, travelling, photography, yachting, swimming, cycling, and playing the bagpipes.

My lessons are personalised to each student’s goals, whether you are a complete beginner, preparing for exams, improving conversation, learning for travel, or interested in Japanese culture. As a native Japanese speaker and Japanese-English bilingual tutor, I can explain grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, kanji, and cultural nuance clearly in English.
Having studied in both Japan and the UK, I understand the differences between the two languages and cultures, as well as the challenges learners may face when approaching Japanese from an English-speaking background. I can therefore teach not only the language itself, but also the cultural context behind it.
I have previously taught beginner Japanese in a school setting, so I am comfortable helping students start from zero. Lessons can be structured and exam-focused, or more relaxed and conversation-based, depending on each student’s needs and learning style.
