About Charles

Hi, I'm Charles! I'm a recent Knox Grammar graduate from the Hills District, heading into medicine in 2027, and French has been one of my favorite subjects throughout school.

I ranked 1st in my Year 12 cohort in both French Continuers and French Extension, and I was Dux of French in Year 10. I was also awarded Dux of the School (STEM) and scored 2610 in the UCAT ANZ (99th percentile). Having just finished the HSC myself, I know the current syllabus, the oral exam, and the written papers inside out, and I understand how daunting speaking in another language can feel.

I've been tutoring for 3 years, and I take it seriously as a professional service. I'm a registered sole trader, I prepare every lesson around the student's needs, and I keep parents updated on progress. My Working With Children Check application is in progress.

At school, I was a House Captain and a debater, so I love helping students express their ideas clearly and confidently, in English or in French.

About the lesson

My approach

Doing well in HSC French means being confident across all four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. I help students build accurate grammar and rich vocabulary, then turn that into fluent, sophisticated responses that impress markers. I've just completed both French Continuers and French Extension, so I know exactly what the exams demand.

How lessons work

Our first lesson begins with a short diagnostic across the four skills, and we set clear goals together. Lessons then combine targeted grammar and vocabulary work with exam practice: listening and reading comprehension, timed writing tasks with detailed feedback, and speaking practice to prepare for the oral exam. For Extension students, I help with analysing the prescribed text, building arguments on key issues, and refining monologues and essays. I use NESA past papers and marking guidelines throughout.

Lesson length

Lessons are usually 1 hour. For HSC students I recommend 1.5 hours, especially when combining written work with speaking practice.

My qualifications and experience

I ranked 1st in my Year 12 cohort at Knox Grammar in both French Continuers and French Extension, and was Dux of French in Year 10. I was also awarded Dux of the School (STEM) in 2026. I have 3 years of tutoring experience.

Who my lessons are for

Year 11 and 12 students studying French Continuers or French Extension, Years 7 to 10 students building their foundations, and beginner to intermediate adult learners who want to improve their French. Lessons are available in person within 20 minutes of Middle Dural, at a local library, or online anywhere. Free travel within 20 minutes; a small travel fee applies beyond that.

What's included

My rate covers the lesson itself plus all the resources I prepare: worksheets, topic summaries, practice questions and past paper material. There's nothing extra to buy. Short homework and feedback between lessons, plus a brief progress update for parents after each session, are included at no extra cost.

Rates

Years 11 and 12: $90 per hour
Years 7 to 10: $75 per hour
UCAT preparation: $110 per hour

Your first lesson is free. It includes a diagnostic and a personalised study plan, so you can see how I teach before committing.

5 hour pack: about 5% off
10 hour pack: 10% off
Packs are paid upfront and can be used for weekly lessons across the term.

Location and travel

Free travel within 20 minutes of Middle Dural, covering most of the Hills District, or at a local library. A small travel fee applies beyond that: $15 per lesson for 20 to 30 minutes, and $25 per lesson for more than 30 minutes. Online lessons are the same rate with no travel fee.

Payment and cancellations

Payment is due within 24 hours of each lesson by bank transfer or PayID. Please give at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations are charged in full, with exceptions for illness or emergencies.
