About Gokhan

I'm Dr Gokhan Guler, a Principal Data & AI Architect who has written software for over twenty years — from engineering and embedded code to enterprise systems and AI — and taught programming for just as long. I hold a PhD in engineering and computer science. I'm not a games-industry developer; I use games because they're the best teaching tool I've found: the feedback is instant, the bugs are visible, and nobody needs persuading to keep going. Unity I came to through interactive 3D visualisation in engineering and architecture, which is how I ended up teaching it.

I've taught for more than twenty years and delivered over 2,000 hours of one-to-one tutoring since 2017, to students from ten-year-olds writing their first Scratch project to career changers and university students at Oxford, Imperial College London, UCL and many others.

I'm patient, I use plain language, and I never make anyone feel stupid for asking — every programmer was a beginner, and the good ones stay curious. Sessions are built around the thing you want to make, so every concept has a reason to exist.

Away from work you'll find me with my family, who are my biggest supporters in all of this.

I teach programming through building games — because a playable game is the fastest way to learn variables, loops, functions, objects and how to debug. For complete beginners, school students (including GCSE and A Level Computer Science), first-year university programmers, and adults learning to code for the first time.

WHAT WE WORK ON

- First steps — Scratch for younger beginners, then Python: variables, conditionals, loops, functions, lists, and reading an error message without panicking.

- Python games with Pygame — a sprite that moves, collisions, scoring, levels and sound, then a complete game you designed yourself.

- JavaScript in the browser — HTML5 canvas games, animation loops, keyboard and mouse input, and publishing your game as a web page you can send to friends.

- C# with Unity — 2D and 3D basics, physics, prefabs, scripting player control, simple enemy AI, UI and scoring: your first playable prototype.

- Programming concepts through games — object-oriented design (a Player class, an Enemy class), state machines, data structures, algorithms and complexity, and version control with Git: the same ideas your Computer Science course examines.

- Exam and coursework support — GCSE and A Level Computer Science programming projects and the NEA, and first-year university programming modules in Python, Java or C.

- Using AI assistants well — GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT as learning aids: how to ask, how to check, and why you still have to understand the code yourself.

RECENT WORK
School-age beginners moving from Scratch to Python · a Python flight-booking chatbot · a JavaScript project on classes, collections and loops · first-year Java fundamentals · Unity for interactive 3D visualisation.

HOW SESSIONS RUN
Online, with screen-sharing. You code on your own machine while I guide, and you keep every file and note. For younger students a parent is welcome to sit in, and I send a short written summary after each session. The first (free) session is a diagnostic: what you've done before, what you want to build, and a plan to get there. I reply within a few hours.

Coursework and NEA projects are the student's own work — I explain, review and challenge.
