About Lorien

Through my various teaching experiences I can say with certainty say that there is nothing quite as rewarding as teaching a foreign language.

I guess you could say that languages are a big part of my life - I was born in the UK and raised in France, the result being that I’m a bilingual speaker of French and English. I was fortunate to be naturally good at languages at school and graduated Lycée with a Littérature International Baccaleaureate with Honours.
Throughout my school years in France, I quickly recognised that my fluency in English was something that I could share and I began giving English lessons in my local area. My students varied widely in both ages and needs - some wanted help with their homework, to improve their grades, others wanted conversation lessons prior to their trip to New York with their partner. I was lucky enough in some cases to witness their progress throughout many years and turned shy beginners to chatty conversation-holders.
Probably the most rewarding lessons I taught was to a boy who had just moved to France from England. He was 13 years old and did not speak a word of French and was finding the adjustment very difficult and his grades were suffering the consequences... Week by week, I watched him improve and together we found a way of teaching French that was both fun and effective to his way of learning. Watching him move from strength to strength was extremely moving as he did not just want to learn this language, he needed to.
I now find myself in England at the University of Hull and I am offering French lessons in Hull, Leeds and the surrounding areas as well as teaching English as a foreign language.

My lessons are open to all ages and all levels are welcome!

My approach varies on my students goals but also adapts to their way of learning - and I try to make my lessons as fun as you let me!

I spend the first lesson getting to know you (in your chosen language of study!) so that I can base my lessons off your interests. It's also an opportunity for you to tell me if you have a specific goal in mind, (ie for an upcoming holiday, a job, an interview) or if you are a school student who needs some extra help with homework or your curriculum or just looking for some casual conversation with a fluent speaker to boost your knowledge and skills.

Below are some examples of the ways I worked with a variety of different students if you'd like to find out more about my methods!

One of my older students was looking specifically for conversation lessons. She was planning a trip to New York and her goal was to be able to hold conversations confidently whilst exploring the city. I planned my lessons to revolve around New York and America, using role play scenarios but also exploring the American culture.

A younger student of mine was struggling with her confidence ; she hated reading English in front of her class to the point that it made her anxious to go into her english lessons. To boost her confidence we did a lot of reading based lessons. We would take turns reading passages of texts or books meaning that she got to practice her English but also hear my accent and eventually pick up my accent as well. We would then discuss in English questions or subjects relating to what we had just read, orally and written. We also began each lesson with a short casual conversation in English which was very useful because as time progressed I began to see her gain confidence and chat with ease with me.

For my student who had just moved to France from England without a word of French who was struggling at school we needed to tackle every area ; Grammar, vocabulary, culture and oral skills. We did so by combining reading passages like with my student I just mentioned above, focusing the reading topics on his interests as well as his school curriculum. Having been in his situation when I was child, I was able to help him adjust to cultural differences between French and English but also explain the intricacies and easter eggs of the French Language and nonsensical grammar! At the end of a topic we had covered I would get him to write a creative essay based on the subject in French. It was extremely rewarding seeing him express himself in French in a way that he enjoyed and he even began developed characters who would regularly make appearances in his essays.
