About the lesson

I view violin teaching as a process of helping each student discover their unique relationship between physical technique, musical imagination, and individual artistic expression. Technical development is never an end in itself, but the means through which a violinist gains the freedom to realize their own understanding of the music. I aim to cultivate in each student the capacity to diagnose and resolve challenges independently - both technically and musically. Equally important is the development of imagination, interpretive discernment, stylistic understanding, and the ability to form their own opinion of a particular performance practice. In teaching, I seek to cultivate disciplined students who approach practice as an active process of listening, questioning, experimentation, and continually evolving new discoveries.

I strongly believe that musical development flourishes within a collaborative learning environment. Chamber music provides an essential laboratory for cultivating attentive listening, dialogue, flexibility, leadership, and shared responsibility. It teaches students to understand their own artistic voice in relation to others, to negotiate differences of interpretation, and to build a common musical purpose without sacrificing individual initiative. I would welcome opportunities to strengthen connections between individual instrumental study, chamber music, orchestral training, and contemporary musical creation and performance practices at Schulich, helping students understand these disciplines not as separate requirements, but as complementary dimensions of a fully developed musical life.
