About Matthew

Economics is an ongoing argument, not a body of content to absorb. That's the thing I most want to get across. Hi, I'm Matthew. I'm from Gateshead and graduated from LSE this summer in Mathematics and Economics. What I like about the subject is that it takes something everybody has a rough intuition about, like prices, wages or exchange rates, and gives you tools to check whether that intuition holds. Often it doesn't, in interesting ways. My own research is on exchange rates, where a very sensible-sounding theory about interest rates and currencies has been contradicted by fifty years of data and nobody fully agrees why. I find that genuinely brilliant.
What I like about economics is that it takes something everybody has a rough intuition about, like prices, wages or exchange rates, and gives you the tools to check whether that intuition actually holds. Often it doesn't, in interesting ways. My own research is on exchange rates, where a very sensible-sounding theory about interest rates and currencies has been contradicted by fifty years of data and nobody fully agrees why. I find that genuinely brilliant, and it is the thing I most want to get across:
I did not always see it that way. At A-Level I was good at reproducing diagrams and definitions and got rewarded for it, and it took a while at LSE to realise that reproducing a model is not the same as understanding what it claims. What changed things was being pushed constantly on the assumptions: why is this curve shaped this way, what happens to the conclusion if you relax that condition, does the result survive contact with data. That was harder and far more interesting, and it made the subject stick, because I was no longer relying on remembering things.
Most students I work with are somewhere in that earlier position, and not through any fault of their own. Diagrams and definitions are what gets examined, so that is what gets taught. I try to give you the other version alongside it, partly because it is more interesting and partly because it is better exam preparation.
I also tutor because I like the diagnostic part of it. When someone is stuck, the cause is usually earlier and smaller than either of us expects, and finding it is a puzzle in itself. And I know from experience that being good at a subject and being confused by it are not opposites, which is why I am sceptical when a student tells me they are just not an economics person.
Outside work I play golf, hike and travel, and I am currently working on two research projects in empirical economics alongside tutoring. Happy to have a chat first so you can see whether my approach suits you.

MY APPROACH:
If you can draw the diagram, state the definition, and still lose marks on the actual question, you are not short of notes. You are missing a feel for what the model is claiming, and that is what an unfamiliar question or a data-response paper exposes. That is the gap I work on. I start from an example you can actually picture, then break it deliberately. What happens to this market if the shock goes the other way? Why does the answer stop making sense when I push this to an extreme? Who gains and who loses, and would you actually believe it? Once you can run those scenarios yourself, the diagrams and definitions become things you can rebuild rather than things to remember.
The same applies to econometrics, and more sharply. Plenty of students can run a regression and read off a p-value with no real sense of what the estimate is doing or when it stops being trustworthy. That gap is where marks are lost, and it is the part I most enjoy teaching.
Lessons run off your material, not mine. Bring the problem set you are stuck on, the past paper you have just sat, the essay question you cannot structure, or the regression output you cannot interpret.

MY BACKGROUND:
I graduated from LSE in 2026 with a BSc in Mathematics and Economics, with first-class marks in Microeconomics (76), Econometrics (75) and Macroeconomics (71). At A-Level I achieved an A in Economics alongside A* in Mathematics. I now work on two research collaborations in empirical economics, one with the University of Exeter on simulation methods for panel data and one with Warwick Business School on foreign exchange markets, alongside my own project on exchange rates using fifty years of data. My strongest area is international and open-economy macroeconomics.

HOW LESSONS WORK:
Sessions are usually one hour, with ninety minutes available for undergraduates or intensive exam preparation. Online lessons use live handwritten working on a tablet, so you see diagrams and derivations built up step by step rather than watching finished slides, and I send you the annotated notes afterwards.
I spend a good part of each session with you doing the work and me staying quiet. In economics particularly, being able to explain something out loud and defend it is most of what is being assessed.
I offer a free 30-minute session first so you can check the approach suits you.

WHO THESE LESSONS ARE FOR:
GCSE and A-Level Economics students, including resits and retakes, on both micro and macro papers and on data-response and essay technique. Undergraduates taking introductory or intermediate microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics or statistics. Sixth-formers applying to economics degrees who want help with personal statements, wider reading and interview preparation.
I am equally happy working with someone who finds the diagrams confusing and someone already on an A who wants an A*.
