About Sean
I'm a TESOL-qualified tutor (PGCE, Merit, University of Birmingham) with eight years of experience teaching English as a foreign language, alongside fluency in Mandarin Chinese (B2–C1) and German, built through five years living in China and a degree in Modern Languages from the University of Bath. I was awarded a distinction for my TESOL coursework on designing bespoke syllabuses — tailoring a course to an individual student rather than following a generic one — and I'm currently maintaining a distinction average (70%+) in my first year of a part-time Master's at LSE.
My commitment to language learning is recognised beyond the classroom too: I received the Great Britain–China Educational Trust's Chinese Language Award in November 2025 for my study of Mandarin. I also write weekly media briefings on China for a global affairs newsletter and publish regular articles on Chinese politics and foreign policy on my own website — work that keeps my subject knowledge current and gives students a genuinely engaged teacher, not just a language coach.
How do I build trust with students?
- Feedback, in the moment and after. I give feedback during the lesson itself, so students know immediately what they're doing well and what to work on. After each lesson, I also provide a written feedback form tailored to that student, covering progress, areas to focus on, and next steps — so progress is visible, not just felt.
- Clear communication around scheduling. I confirm lesson times and availability proactively, so there's no ambiguity about when lessons are happening.
Getting to know the student, not just the subject. Before designing a course, I take time to understand a student's specific goals, interests, and learning style, so lessons are built around them rather than a one-size-fits-all syllabus.
What results have my students achieved with me?
- A student I tutored for three years was accepted into a prestigious international high school in Beijing.
- Another student was accepted into an international middle school in Beijing.
- A third student raised her IELTS average score from 5.5 to 7.0.

I teach English as a Foreign Language to learners of all levels, from complete beginners to advanced students preparing for exams or professional use. I also teach Mandarin Chinese, German, and history at GCSE and A-Level.
My approach is communicative and learner-centred, and is based on my personal value of enhancing critical thinking skills. In practice, this means we focus on using the language in realistic situations, not just memorising rules. Each lesson blends structured practice (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation) with genuine conversation, so you build both accuracy and confidence. I adjust the mix depending on your goals, whether that's passing an exam, preparing for work or travel, or simply becoming a more confident speaker.
Lessons typically run for 60 minutes, though I can offer shorter 30-minute sessions for younger learners or those just starting out, where shorter, more frequent practice often works better.
I hold a PGCE in TESOL (Merit) from the University of Birmingham (2020-2022) and have nine years of experience teaching English as a foreign language. I also lived and worked in China for five years (2017-2022), which shaped how I teach Mandarin, and I studied German and Russian for my BA in European Studies and Modern Languages at the University of Bath (2013-2017). I'm fluent in both Mandarin and German.
My lessons are suitable for all ages and abilities depending on your goals.
