I would approach my student by first making sure whether they are willing to learn Chinese characters, as this would require much more hard work. Then I would ask what is their purpose of learning (business, travel) and would ask if they are interested in learning about Chinese culture along with the language. Based on their preference, I would design specific topic for each lessons to satisfy their requirement.
