About Oli
I have a BSc in Environmental Science, an MRes in Ocean Science, and currently 2 years into a PhD in Marine Biogeochemistry studying the behaviour of metals like iron, copper, and zinc in our oceans. I had the incredible opportunity during my Master's to go on an international research expedition to Antarctica to study how rapid deglaciation affects marine systems.
I have been involved in mentoring and educating students since 2014 in both academia and in practice (before I pursued a career in science I trained and practiced as a nurse in the UK). I have also instructed students at university level in fieldwork onboard sea-going vessels, in the lab, and in problem-based workshops. I have spent the last 2 years assisting in the delivery and assessment of an undergraduate module and I have also co-supervised students at Master's level demonstrating lab and analytical techniques. Additionally I have been a facilitator and mentor on a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) run by the University of Southampton.

Each lesson is tailored to the specific needs of the student whether it be exploring key/fundamental concepts, helping with homework/assignment problems, exam preparation etc. each lesson is different and directed by the students. The pace is, therefore, governed by my students. If we need to spend more time revisiting fundamentals (there's nothing basic about the basics!), then that's perfectly fine!
I try to break down complex scientific concepts into smaller, more relatable pieces that are easier to remember and build upon in an environment where students feel supported to ask questions. I adapt the way I describe concepts and explain problems to ensure every student leaves a lesson with a better understanding than when they started. We'll work through problems together, I'll explain my workings, and guide you through how to approach extended answers and essays.
I'm also happy to help with essay/dissertation proof re-reading, personal statements, and application reviews.
