About Ammar

I am a multidisciplinary educator, researcher, engineer, trainer, and consultant with more than 25 years of experience in teaching, professional training, consulting, project work, and one-to-one mentoring.
My academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, a Master’s degree in Management Information Systems, and a PhD in Knowledge Management and Artificial Intelligence. This multidisciplinary background allows me to connect theory, software, data, engineering logic, research methodology, and real-world decision making.
Over the years, I have completed hundreds of engineering and technical projects, supported professionals and organizations, and supervised or assisted hundreds of university students and researchers. My teaching style is structured, diagnostic, example-based, and adapted to the learner’s real objective rather than a fixed generic script.
For Geographic Information Systems specifically, I bring more than 25 years of spatial-modeling experience and project work spanning ArcGIS environments, QGIS, ENVI, ERDAS, spatial databases, remote-sensing workflows, geoprocessing, mapping, and the integration of GIS with broader technical and analytical systems. I focus equally on conceptual spatial reasoning, correct workflow design, data quality, reproducibility, and practical software competence.
I teach in English, French, and Arabic and adapt explanations to the learner’s age, academic level, profession, software version, data context, and immediate project objective.

GIS becomes much easier when every tool is connected to a spatial question. My lessons therefore focus on both software fluency and spatial reasoning: what the data means, where it comes from, how coordinate systems affect results, why a method is appropriate, how to validate outputs, and how to communicate a defensible spatial conclusion.
I support high-school learners with suitable projects, college and CEGEP students, university students, Master’s and PhD researchers, planners, environmental and public-sector professionals, engineers who need geospatial workflows, analysts, and complete beginners who want a structured path into GIS.
Depending on your goals, we can work on:
• GIS foundations: layers, features, attributes, vector and raster models, spatial relationships, topology concepts, scale, resolution, metadata, and the difference between making a map and performing spatial analysis
• ArcGIS Pro workflow: projects, maps, scenes, catalogs, layers, symbology, selections, joins, relates, geoprocessing, layouts, geodatabases, model-based workflows, and systematic troubleshooting
• QGIS workflow: projects, layer management, symbology, labeling, processing tools, graphical models, plugins, layouts, data sources, interoperability, and efficient open-source GIS practice
• Coordinate reference systems and projections: geographic versus projected systems, datums, transformations, units, distortion, on-the-fly display, reprojection, and diagnosing misaligned layers
• Vector data management: points, lines, polygons, attribute tables, field design, editing, snapping, topology awareness, domains/constraints where relevant, data cleaning, and quality control
• Raster data management: cells, extent, resolution, NoData, resampling, bands, raster algebra, reclassification, mosaics, clipping, and choosing raster operations appropriately
• Geoprocessing: buffers, clips, dissolves, intersections, unions, overlays, spatial joins, proximity analysis, extraction, aggregation, and designing reproducible processing chains
• Spatial analysis: location-based reasoning, density, hot spots and patterns where methodologically appropriate, accessibility, suitability, multi-criteria concepts, network and surface analysis foundations, and interpreting results responsibly
• Geodatabases and spatial data organization: file geodatabases, schemas, relationships, naming conventions, folder structures, data dictionaries, validation, and maintainable project organization
• Cartography and map communication: visual hierarchy, classification, colour logic, symbols, labels, scale, legends, north arrows, layout balance, uncertainty, accessibility, and avoiding misleading maps
• Remote sensing foundations: sensors, spatial/spectral/temporal/radiometric resolution, bands, false-colour composites, preprocessing concepts, classification logic, accuracy awareness, and change-detection foundations
• ENVI workflows: imagery exploration, spectral information, preprocessing concepts, classification-oriented workflows, indices, raster analysis, and interpretation where relevant to the learner’s project
• ERDAS workflows: image preparation, raster processing, classification-oriented workflows, change analysis, spatial modeling, and project-specific troubleshooting
• Terrain and surface analysis: DEMs, slope, aspect, hillshade, contour concepts, hydrologic foundations, interpolation awareness, and choosing terrain representations appropriately
• Spatial data quality: completeness, positional and thematic accuracy, precision, lineage, temporal validity, scale/resolution mismatch, uncertainty, and validating outputs before drawing conclusions
• Data acquisition and preparation: open-data portals, CSV and coordinate data, shapefiles, GeoPackage, geodatabases, GeoJSON, KML/KMZ, imagery, web services, and cleaning data before analysis
• Web and cloud GIS foundations: hosted layers, web maps, sharing concepts, service-based data, collaboration, permissions, and when desktop versus web/cloud workflows are appropriate
• Geospatial interoperability: moving data between ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, CAD/GIS contexts, spreadsheets, databases, web services, and common exchange formats while controlling CRS, schema, scale, and data loss
• Spatial databases and PostGIS awareness: geometry, spatial indexing concepts, spatial queries, database-backed GIS, and when a spatial database is preferable to file-based storage - without turning the lesson into generic SQL tutoring
• Automation awareness: ModelBuilder, QGIS processing models, batch processing, repeatable workflows, and limited geoprocessing scripting concepts where directly necessary to the GIS task
• GeoAI awareness: where machine learning and deep learning intersect with imagery, object detection, pixel classification, feature extraction, and spatial prediction
• Applied project domains: urban and regional planning, environment, natural resources, infrastructure, transportation, public health, business location, utilities, risk, emergency management, and other spatial decision contexts
• Research support: designing a GIS workflow for a research question, preparing spatial data, documenting methods, checking assumptions and limitations, producing defensible maps, and interpreting spatial outputs
• Academic project support: understanding the brief, planning the workflow, learning the tools, reviewing your own analysis, correcting errors, and improving reproducibility without completing assessed submissions on the learner’s behalf
• Real-project mentoring: applying GIS methods to an actual map, spatial analysis, remote-sensing task, planning problem, environmental project, geodatabase, or professional workflow while preserving the learner’s ownership and professional responsibility
• Troubleshooting and file rescue: diagnosing broken paths, missing data, CRS problems, invalid geometry, failed joins, incorrect selections, processing errors, raster alignment issues, performance problems, layout failures, and unclear analytical results
My teaching method is diagnostic, visual, and project-based. We begin with your actual objective, current level, data, software version, assignment or project context, and the decision you need to make. I then build a structured path from concepts to workflow, using live demonstrations, guided practice, checkpoints, interpretation, and independent reconstruction.
The goal is not simply to produce one map. You should understand why the workflow works, when it does not, how spatial assumptions affect the result, how to detect data-quality problems, how to reproduce the analysis, and how to explain the conclusion to a supervisor, client, committee, or decision-maker.
