My approach to tutoring is simple and designed to make learning practical, engaging, and tailored to each student's unique needs. I am flexible with class times, and I offer classes after hours and during weekends for the convenience of my students. I start by discussing the student's objectives—whether they’re preparing for exams, improving their academic performance, or gaining practical knowledge for career advancement. I use real-life examples, discussions, and hands-on exercises to make learning engaging and relatable. I track progress regularly, and provide constructive feedback. Classes are offered online via Teams or Zoom applications and if students do not have access to these applications I am flexible to suit the student's needs. I also offer home visits for a more personal experience (Rates are subject to exam, teaching level, distance, time and additional requirements). My goal is to build students' confidence and help them excel academically and professionally. Find out more about Faizur Rahman

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in accounting began during my secondary school years. I was helping my dad prepare his books for his business. He would teach me how to do simple calculations to find out net sales for the day and record transaction that happened during the day. I was fascinated by how businesses operated and how financial information played such a big role in decision making. This curiosity led me to pursue a Bachelor's degree in International Business with a major in Accounting in New Zealand, which laid a solid foundation for my career. During this time, I started off working with KPMG which gave me real life experience in various sectors like banking, finance, manufacturing, and hospitality which further deepened my passion for the field.

My interest in tutoring developed naturally while helping classmates and colleagues understand accounting concepts. I often found that many people struggled with finance, not because they weren't smart, but because it wasn't explained in a simple or relatable way. I started by offering help informally, then gradually moved into private tutoring because I saw how much value I could add by breaking things down in a clear and practical manner.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Financial Accounting, Financial Management, and Taxation. These subjects are at the heart of how businesses operate and make decisions. I enjoy teaching topics like financial statements, budgeting, break-even analysis, tax planning, and performance evaluation. What I love most is connecting these topics to real life business situations such as how a retail store tracks profit, how a manufacturer manages costs, or how an importer handles tax obligations.

I encourage discussions that link classroom theory to practical use, such as how financial reports can influence investment decisions or how tax planning can benefit small business owners. While I enjoy all areas, I find some highly technical tax legislation, especially when it changes frequently and makes it less enjoyable to teach. But even those topics become interesting when I link them to real life outcomes and make them easier to grasp.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My role models was my dad he was the one who truly inspired me and taught me the basics and helped me choose the accounting path. Later on I had a lecturer during my higher studies who helped me throughout my studies. He had a unique way of teaching and made even the most difficult accounting concepts feel simple and logical. He used real world examples and was always patient, taking time to make sure the topic was understood before moving on. That experience stayed with me. It showed me the power of a good teacher and inspired me to use the same approach giving clear explanations, real life applications, and a lot of patience.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor should be more than just knowledgeable. Tutors must be approachable, patient, and a good communicator. Every student learns differently, so adaptability is key. Tutors must be able to simplify complex topics, use real examples, and create a learning environment where students feel safe to ask questions. Consistency, encouragement, and providing regular feedback also help students stay motivated and track their progress. Most importantly, a good tutor should genuinely care about their students' success and be willing to go the extra mile.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was doing my Master's in the UK, I noticed some of my classmates were really struggling with financial concepts, especially those who came from non-finance backgrounds. I offered to help, and we started meeting regularly. I used simple language and examples like comparing budgeting to managing household expenses. Eventually, I conducted a small webinar to guide everyone through a financial analysis report. The group became more confident, and many of them scored much higher than they expected. That experience reinforced my belief that with the right guidance, anyone can understand finance and accounting.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

One of the biggest challenges I faced was transitioning between different accounting systems and standards as I moved from New Zealand to Australia and then to the UK. Each country had its own rules, and it took time to adjust and understand the local tax laws and accounting practices. Another challenge is keeping up with constant changes in taxation and financial regulations, especially in my role at HMRC. But these challenges have helped me develop a broader, more global understanding of the subject, something I now bring into my teaching.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My biggest passion is helping people to understand accounting and finance in a way that feels useful and empowering. I know many students find these subjects intimidating, so I aim to make them more approachable and even enjoyable. I also love mentoring students and young professionals, especially those looking to build careers in finance or start their own businesses. Outside of teaching, I'm passionate about creating educational content. I'm currently developing accounting subject related videos and voiceover lessons for my YouTube channel, Accounting and Taxation Academy (AAT-Academy), to make learning accessible to a wider audience.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

What sets me apart is my combination of professional experience, global exposure, and commitment to student success. I've worked in top firms like KPMG and across various industries, which means I bring practical insights into every lesson. I also understand what students face because I've been one myself navigating education systems in different countries. I'm flexible with class times, offering online sessions in the evenings and weekends, and tailor my teaching to each student's needs. I believe in building confidence, not just delivering content. With me, you are not just learning, you are preparing to succeed in the real world.
