About Charlie
Hello! My name is Charlie, a first year MEng Mechanical Engineering student at Cardiff University, and I’m passionate about helping others succeed in maths and the sciences. Having recently been through GCSEs and A-levels myself, I understand how challenging these subjects can feel at times—but I also know how satisfying it is when everything clicks. As someone pursuing a career in engineering, maths and physics are at the heart of everything I do, from designing efficient systems to solving real-world problems. I’ve always loved exploring how the universe works, and I want to share that enthusiasm with others while making these subjects approachable, enjoyable, and understandable. Why do I teach? Because I’ve been in your shoes, and I know how much of a difference the right guidance can make. Whether you’re aiming for top grades, need help tackling tricky concepts, or want to build confidence in your problem-solving skills, I’m here to help. My goal is not just to teach you how to solve problems but to help you develop the tools and mindset to approach challenges with confidence. I offer friendly, focused, and supportive lessons tailored to your pace and learning style. Let’s work together to turn confusion into clarity and help you achieve your goals.

My Approach to Tutoring: 1. Techniques and Teaching Methodology Conceptual Understanding First: I focus on ensuring students grasp the underlying principles in maths and physics rather than just memorising formulas. For example, instead of just applying Newton’s laws, we’ll explore why they work. Step-by-Step Problem Solving: I break complex problems into manageable steps, teaching students how to approach any problem methodically. This includes identifying given data, choosing the right formulas, and interpreting results. Visual Aids and Real-Life Applications: Physics and maths come alive when connected to real-world examples. For instance, we might analyse the physics of roller coasters or the maths behind a sports trajectory. Practice and Feedback: Practice is critical in these subjects. I provide plenty of examples, past exam questions, and personalised exercises, coupled with detailed feedback to reinforce learning. Building Confidence: I help students overcome maths anxiety and physics intimidation by showing them how to tackle even the toughest questions with confidence and clarity. 2. Typical Length of a Lesson 1 hour is optimal, though for intensive topics (e.g., calculus or electromagnetism), we might extend to 90 minutes. Structure: Warm-Up (5-10 minutes): Review key concepts from previous lessons or solve a quick problem. Core Topic (30-40 minutes): Deep dive into the main concept or topic of the day with guided problem-solving. Practice and Wrap-Up (10-15 minutes): Solve additional problems together, discuss key takeaways, and assign optional exercises. 3. My Qualifications and Experience I tutor GCSE students and provide support in Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. It is rewarding to see them learn the crucial foundations and it gives me the satisfaction that I am trusted at this important time. This then led me to applying for a work experience placement at Siemens during the summer months, wanting to experience a work environment and develop my communication, leadership and teamwork skills. Achieving six grade '9's at GCSE including the three sciences and English language and a grade A in maths at A level truly reflects my STEM abilities. Working with a positive approach towards set goals is vital to me and I take pride in organising myself to achieve them. During my school years, I was selected as Head Boy and Form Captain, both of which roles I undertook with care and responsibility. I enjoyed taking an active role within my school community, representing peers, organising events and giving presentations to both new and existing students and parents. 4. Who the Lessons Are For GCSE science and maths students, either combined or triple are a key focus group of mine especially when focussing on their mathematics GCSE. Students taking IGCSE have also accomplished extensive progress through my guidance when tutoring them on specific STEM topics. 11+ are also an important body of mine, guiding them through the exams that will allow them to enter prestigious secondary schools, I myself did these exams being offered places at St George's, RGS Guildford and Halliford with the last gaining an academic scholarship.

Incredible! Very helpful when trying to understand new topics, explains it in a way that really works for me. Brilliant guy as well, very easy to talk to and ask questions, very kind and teaches at a great pace.Extremely understanding and a very good listener, takes into account different learning styles whilst also avoiding rushing into a topic too fast which allows for a strong foundation in the subject.
