About Michael

- Q. What kind of experience do you have?

I've been a secondary school teacher in the West of London and a private tutor of both Maths and Physics for 25+ years;
Having taught in St. Mark's School, Hounslow and as Head of Physics in Cranford Community College and Ealing Tutorial College I nowadays provide tuition, either face-to-face in my home at Whitton or - increasingly - online.
I have taught students across the full ability range, students with moderate learning difficulties as well as those aiming to achieve top grades in GCSE and at A - Level.
All of my advanced students have gone on to University, some to medical school and successful Oxford or Cambridge entrance.
In my early years I gained experience as an examiner and that has enabled me to guide my students more effectively in preparation for GCSE and A - Level exams.
I am very familiar with the requirements of the main Exam Boards and the recent changes to their specifications in both Maths and Physics.

Over the last few years I have developed strategies, including Skype and the latest advances in technology, to carry out tuition online, so that I can share my knowledge and enthusiasm with a wider range of students who would benefit from my help. - How much do you charge?

My fee covers not only the hour of tuition, but also:-
I offer the following, with no extra charge:

pre-lesson preparation time;
providing personalised lesson notes at the end of each lesson;
setting homework or past exam paper;
marking homework or past exam paper;
providing online support between lessons;
providing feedback to students and parents.

So, when you consider the full package, you will see that each lesson means you get at least 2 hours of a specialist teacher's time and the benefit of my years of work and experience as a teacher. I hope you will agree that the lesson fee is actually very good value for money. Please see examples of my work in "My Files" and my Testimonials.

Fees: preliminary meeting = £20; KS2 / KS3 (£35); GCSE / IGCSE (£35); A-Level 1st Year (£45) per hour.

- Where do you teach?

I am based in Whitton, Twickenham and spend part of the year in N. Ireland.
I offer tuition ONLINE worldwide. Currently I have students living in various parts of the UK, and in China; last year I delivered Maths lessons to Kuwait, China and to Spain.

Over the last few years I have developed strategies, including Skype, Zoom and Bitpaper, to carry out tuition online, so that I can share my knowledge and enthusiasm with a wider range of students who would benefit from my help.

For your Preliminary Meeting and online discussion of how I teach online, and to see it in action - please either email, or phone or send me a text message.

Modern technology enables you to have a personal tuition learning experience which is just as effective as having face - to - face tuition, and for many students online tuition is less stressful and more effective than face to face tuition. You might like to try a preliminary Zoom meeting online. It takes 20 to 30 minutes of your time to see how my system works, with no obligation to book tuition.
With my current online students and parents (GCSE Maths; GCSE Physics and A - Level Physics ) I create a working relationship and a learning experience which is just as effective as face - to - face tuition.

We use Zoom for conversation. It's just like talking to parents and student around the same kitchen table!
Using screen-share, I can still share my qualifications, my certificates, my enhanced DBS certificate and discuss the student's educational needs, just as I do in face - to - face.

The pages of notes which I - and the student - make together in the course of the lesson - at the end of the lesson I scan the pages and send them to the student. That way the student gets the complete set of our personalised lesson notes, to keep on their computer or to print out.

The student does not have to download anything to his / her computer (just Zoom for free), and have an internet connection. Online tuition is an excellent option when travelling distance is a problem.

The benefits to the student and teacher of online tuition are:
• convenience of not having to travel on cold and dark evenings. Great if you can't find a local tutor or if you are overseas.
* you can find an excellent tutor online.
* you're not limited to a tutor who lives within a 5 or 10 mile radius.
* 2 students together can benefit from online tuition.
• no travel costs.
• no disruption to home life.
• working in familiar home environment, or anywhere you can get on the internet. (It doesn't have to be a very fancy high speed connection).
• more time slots available.
• excellent for either one-off help, short - term or longer term help with homeworks, topics or exam paper practice.
• no long - term contract, unless you want to discuss a longer term package of lessons.
• tuition when you need it.
• tutor support between lessons.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Whether you need help with homework, coursework guidance, specific topics, revision strategies, or exam technique and practice at past exam papers, etc. . . help is available, and you and parents WILL see improvement = decreased stress, less worry and anxiety, increasing CONFIDENCE with the subject.
This usually follows through to BETTER GRADES in tests and exams.

When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
I've always been interested in education and I've been a tutor ever since I began teaching 30 years ago.
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
I teach Physics and Maths.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
When I was at school and university I had great teachers.
When I was a teacher I learned from many brilliant teachers.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
A good tutor needs to be friendly, patient, knowledgeable, wise and have a sense of fun.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
Of the many highlights of my teaching career, the biggest was my Physics trip to CERN where I took my students on a one week trip to the biggest experiment on the planet !
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
In Physics or Maths: There isn't a difficulty that the student has that I haven't already faced, worked hard and overcome. So I understand the difficulties faced by any student.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
I have a passion for building a working relationship with the student and parents, and for seeing the student understand and do things they couldn't do before my tuition.
