About Sophie
About Me- I’m Sophie, a 24 year old science teacher from London. Originally trained as a microbiologist at the University of Surrey, I have worked in a range of clinical settings including child and adolescent mental health before finding my calling in education.
I have held roles within student unions, closely supporting student well-being
and developing inclusive curricula with university provost, alongside tutoring science privately for 8 years. I am a qualified secondary science teacher, hold a PGCE (distinction) in science and have had the honour to teach in a range of settings, from private to alternative provision. I am constantly engaging in CPD, eager to expand my knowledge and skill set to improve student outcomes, using techniques informed by robust evidence.
I adopt a holistic approach with my students, aiming to form positive professional relationships between us, parents/carers and schools. Effective communication and transparency is crucial in building trust that underpins effective tuition. I believe science is the most fun and interesting subject in the world, and aim to inspire that same enthusiasm in my students through fun activities, development of scientific capital and supplementary resources (trip lists, watch lists, etc).
I am safeguarding trained and enhanced DBS checked, and have received specialist training to work with students with SEND and those from underprivileged groups.

My Philosophy- I believe learning should be accessible to all, regardless of background, ability or previous experience. As such, my lessons and resources are tailored to the individual needs of each student. Rooted heavily in the constructivist theories of educators such as Posner, Freyburg and Koballa, I believe learning best occurs as an active and ever evolving process. ‘Assessment for Learning’ makes use of consistent formative assessment to identify personal misconceptions and address their root cause, breaking these down through discussion, experimentation and targeted activities. As such, my students are able to develop a deeper understanding of science, not only aiding in future assessment, but developing the key skills of ‘working scientifically’- an area poorly addressed in schools over the pandemic, due to restrictions on practical work. Consistent assessment in this way identifies personal gaps in knowledge and how to address them long term- ‘rebuilding’ rather than ‘putting a plaster over’ as it were.
In a deeply connectivist society, I adopt a ‘blended teaching’ approach, making use of education technologies such as Kahoot, NearPod and Microsoft Teams. The nature of sessions rely on students’ access and comfort using technology, and resources are differentiated and scaffolded to reflect learning needs. Making use of assessment tools such as Educake allows students to become accountable for their own progress, identifying areas for development and forming synoptic links between content that can be applied in school.
I am proud to be a part of the NEU’s No Child Left Behind campaign. Government plans to cut Universal Credit will have a devastating impact on low-income families with 5.5 million set to lose £1,040 per year, plunging 200,000 children into poverty this year alone. The pandemic has widened an already prevalent attainment gap between the most and least privileged children in the U.K., and I believe it is the responsibility of each teacher to address this. As such, I offer reduced tuition rates for students on Pupil Premium, doing my part to support fair education for all.
My Services-
* KS2/3 science tuition
* Combined/triple GCSE science tuition (foundation and higher)
* A Level Biology and Physics tuition

My eldest daughter had Sophie as her biology teacher whilst studying her A Levels and often attributes her academic success to her. Sophie went above and beyond to support my daughter, especially during the university application process- allowing her to act as lab technician for younger students in her free periods, providing her extensive reading lists and academic writing support for her OxBridge essays. My daughter is now reading Biochemistry at Oxford!
Seeing the success she had, I was delighted to see Sophie had transitioned to private tuition following her departure from the school. She now supports my 14 year old daughter in her transition to GCSE and my 11 year old son, grasping the step up in content from KS2 to KS3. Both absolutely adore her and are able to grasp increasingly difficult concepts that in-school teaching may not effectively support.
Sophie is an extension of the family at this point, being round the house two nights a week. Her communication between our kids, us as parents and the school is better than much I have seen in the public schooling system. She has built an incredible rapport with the kids, who trust her both academically and pastorally. We love her so much we have invited her to host my youngest son's (a budding 8 year old scientist) birthday party, where we will be taking part in fun at home science experiments!
Our family cannot recommend Sophie enough- she has a clear passion for education and the subject she teaches which has developed an incredible enthusiasm for science amongst all my children, and to an extent myself! Her subject knowledge is extensive, and most importantly current, helping to embed what she calls 'the nature of science' in her teaching, which we have seen really pay off with out eldest now in higher education. Affordable, friendly and all round brilliant experience, we look forward to working with Sophie for (hopefully) many years in the futureMiss Holland was my science teacher in my final year of school. Trying to prepare for GCSES in lockdown was really hard but she always paid attention to the students and knew how to help them best. Her lessons were informative and exciting, so after she left in the summer my mum asked if she could tutor me privately to prepare for A levels! I am currently enrolled doing all three sciences and Miss Holland is able to support me in all three, helping me get to grips with the course content but also helping me read widely, practise my academic writing and practice key scientific skills, which I think will really help me with uni applications in February
Sophie helped me get through my GCSE Science exam - she was always extremely knowledgeable about the topics and recommended materials for further reading around the subject. I can't recommend Sophie enough!
