About John

John Replogle is a freelance musician and educator in New York City. He earned a Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music, and a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory. Since moving to New York, John has been playing on Broadway shows including: Book of Mormon, Matilda, Pippin, Paramour (Cirque Du Soleil on Broadway), The Prom, and Hello Dolly! (starring Bette Midler, David Hyde Pierce, Donna Murphy, and Bernadette Peters), at Radio City Music Hall (The Christmas Spectacular and The Spring Spectacular), and also
with the Big Apple Circus to name a few. John has also performed for several artists including: Hugh Jackman, Paul Anka, The Who, Gino Vannelli, Jason Scheff, The Four Tops and Temptations, Bobby Sanabria, Clay Aiken, Danilo Perez, Audra MacDonald, and David Alan Grier. John has toured nationally and internationally. Some notable touring experiences include: Paul Anka, National Tour of Monty Python’s Spamalot, National Tour of The Prom, The Artie Shaw Orchestra, and The Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus (The Red, Blue, and Gold shows). John is frequently called for various recording opportunities as well. Recently, he was featured on an episode of Z Nation on the SyFy network. John can also be heard and seen in the movie “My Best Friend’s Girl” starring Jason Biggs, Dane Cook, and Kate Hudson. As an educator, John has experience teaching clinics on trumpet pedagogy and section playing, as well as brass instrument instruction. John serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Trumpet with Ocean City College, Trumpet Instructor and Jazz Band Director at Elizabethtown College, teaching artist with the WeBop program at Jazz at Lincoln Center, teaching artist with the Bronx Arts Ensemble, and also Brass Faculty with The Music Conservatory of Westchester. John received the Maynard Ferguson Award and the Ray Kotwica Award in 2007 for Excellence in Performance.

As an educator, I have had experience with teaching master classes around the world. Additionally, I have extensive experience teaching music to students of all ages from preschool to college, in both public and private classroom settings. Master classes and classroom teaching included trumpet pedagogy, musicianship, music theory and harmony, jazz ensemble techniques, jazz improvisation, jazz music theory and harmony, writing and arranging for ensembles, ear training, sightreading, commercial music ensemble techniques, brass and trumpet ensemble techniques, music performance, music history, jazz music history, music technology, and music business/networking. It also included creating class curricula, class syllabi, assignments, lesson plans and clinic handouts using Microsoft Office, Garage Band, Logic, Note Flight, Google Classroom, Google Sheets, Zoom, Google Meets, Dropbox, Adobe Acrobat, Canvas, and Excel applications in order to fulfill these duties.

I gained a variety of experience throughout my years of professional employment in music business management, networking, and outreach as well as in music education. An example of this is my work as an adjunct faculty trumpet instructor, jazz ensemble, and brass methods course instructor at Elizabethtown College. My responsibilities include: recruiting students, writing music, and modifying the arrangements to adapt them for an ensemble that wasn’t a traditional jazz big band. These efforts helped the ensemble improve its sound and gave the students confidence to perform their repertoire at a concert with ease. Employing skills as a writer, arranger, conductor, as well as a recruiter, resulted in a very successful school concert performance by the Elizabethtown College jazz orchestra. These skills and experience are also useful as an adjunct assistant professor – applied trumpet at the Ocean City College in NJ to recruit trumpet students for the ensembles, to do custom writing and in teaching trumpet exercises specifically written to help the students quickly improve. I have also taught in public school with the Bronx Arts Ensemble. I determined almost immediately during my discussions with the music teachers at one of the public schools served by Bronx Arts, that the students had never performed in concert. I took the initiative with their agreement to write full arrangements of popular songs for all the instruments (violins, woodwinds, brass and percussion), for use during one of the lesson hours in group rehearsal. I also obtained permission from the principal for the full orchestra to play an assembly (which worked as a recruiting tool for more students to join the orchestra) in the winter, a concert at the school’s talent shows in the spring as well as a concert for parents right before summer. The students excelled so much in this environment that our team began networking with Julliard to obtain more opportunities for the students to play in groups and to be around other young musicians.

I have studied with many teachers to refine my own playing and to improve my trumpet performance pedagogy for the benefit of my students. The Donald S. Reinhardt method of brass teaching has been a core component of my studies over the last 20 years and has resulted in my being able to successfully help students resolve any issues they might have with the mechanics of playing a brass instrument in an accelerated timeline. These techniques imparted have enabled my students to perform both efficiently and with a positive mindset. I have a strong passion for helping students achieve their musical goals with their instrument and equipping them with the skills and tools needed to express their musical message confidently and successfully to an audience.

Mentoring students as a way for them to build a foundation for a career in music is another key element of my skills portfolio. This includes providing them with the tools to successfully network and collaborate with colleagues and stay well-informed with the current trends in music and music technology. Uplifting my students and ensuring that they achieve their goals towards becoming professional musicians is what drives me in a teaching role. Cultivation of skills both in performance and technology along with a sense of giving back to the community via mentoring and teaching are core values that I deliver through my teaching efforts.

I have been successfully performing as a professional in New York City for 17 years as a freelance musician and on Broadway shows in New York City for 15 years. My performances have included Radio City Music Hall as well as a series of other shows. I have also toured and played in recordings for a large variety of music from classical to jazz with many different groups and organizations.

I am currently an in-demand freelance musician and educator in New York City. My ongoing work as an educator includes being a faculty member for the brass and ensemble departments for Elizabethtown College, Ocean City College, Music Conservatory of Westchester, Long Island Conservatory of Music, and as a teaching artist for the Bronx Arts Ensemble and Jazz at Lincoln Center. These roles require: working with many students and schools to plan the yearly schedule of concerts; writing full arrangements for specific ensembles; writing musical exercises for jazz improvisation and jazz ensemble pedagogy; directing, and conducting ensembles; teaching correct brass pedagogy for successful performance; developing contacts with a variety of musical instrument suppliers to increase school inventory and obtain purchase discounts while remaining within the school budget; recruiting students; working together with faculty as a team; managing a team and developing camaraderie within the team; and problem solving for program budget creation. As a freelance musician I also continuously perform Broadway shows, record, tour, and participate in many musical projects. Recent musical projects include Mary Ann McSweeny’s and Elio Villafranca’s Charles Mingus project, Michael Kammers and the MK Groove Orchestra, 1st National Tour of the Broadway Musical “The Prom”, and performing in Paul Anka’s Orchestra.
