About Emily
Hi, I'm Emily! Music theory is the subject that completely changed the way I hear and understand music, and for the past 7 years I have been sharing that same transformation with students of all ages. I work with beginners learning to read their very first notes all the way through intermediate students tackling advanced topics like songwriting, orchestration, musicology, and music production theory, and I bring the same level of clarity, patience, and genuine enthusiasm to every level.
I teach theory in a way that is always connected to real music — actual songs, real chord progressions, and styles and genres my students already love — because I know from experience that theory clicks fastest when it feels relevant and directly useful. I cover everything from absolute basics all the way through AP Music Theory level content, songwriting, orchestration, film scoring, and music production theory, and I always make sure every concept is fully understood before we move forward. Over 7 years I have helped students pass school and AP Music Theory exams with strong results, supported young songwriters in completing and performing their first original compositions, and guided students through advanced orchestration and musicology topics for high school and early college coursework. I was honored with a Music Theory Excellence Award by the Colorado Music Educators Association in 2024. My online one-to-one live lessons are clear, visual, engaging, and always built around making theory feel exciting and genuinely useful. Let's make theory finally make perfect sense!

My music theory lessons cover music notation reading and writing in treble and bass clef, note values and rhythm reading, time signatures and meter, basic and compound rhythms and syncopation, scales — major, minor, pentatonic, modal and chromatic, intervals and ear recognition, triads and seventh chords, chord qualities — major, minor, diminished, augmented and dominant, chord progressions and functional harmony, the circle of fifths and key relationships, Roman numeral analysis, diatonic and non-diatonic harmony, secondary dominants and borrowed chords, voice leading and smooth part writing, counterpoint fundamentals and species counterpoint, ear training and melodic dictation, harmonic and rhythmic dictation, solfege and sight-singing, musical form and structure analysis — binary, ternary, rondo and sonata form, music history and musicology from Medieval through Contemporary periods, style analysis across classical, jazz, pop and film music, orchestration fundamentals and instrument family ranges, arranging for small and large ensembles, songwriting techniques including melody writing and song structure, lyric writing basics and hook development, original composition projects, introduction to film scoring and music for media, music production theory including beats, loops and arrangement concepts, MIDI composition basics, and focused AP Music Theory and college-level exam preparation.
