About Thomas
I am a native Chinese speaker who grew up in Shanghai and later moved to Hong Kong, which allowed me to develop strong proficiency in both Mandarin and Cantonese, as well as Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
I received over 12 years of Chinese education through both international school programs and traditional local Chinese school systems. This dual educational background gives me a deep understanding of both academic Chinese and practical everyday communication.
In high school, I studied Chinese Language and Literature as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and achieved a score of 6 out of 7, demonstrating strong abilities in Chinese reading, writing, literary analysis, and formal communication.
Because of my multicultural educational experience, I am able to adapt my teaching style to students from different backgrounds, whether they are complete beginners, heritage learners, international students, or advanced learners seeking deeper understanding of Chinese language and culture.
I can teach:
Mandarin Chinese
Cantonese
Simplified Chinese
Traditional Chinese
conversational Chinese
Chinese reading and writing
pronunciation and tones
Chinese literature and cultural studies
IB Chinese support and exam preparation

I approach teaching Chinese as both a language and a living cultural landscape. A good lesson should feel less like memorizing a dictionary and more like unlocking a new operating system for understanding people, humor, music, food, internet culture, and everyday life.
My teaching methodology and techniques
My teaching style combines structured foundations with practical immersion. I focus on helping students use Chinese confidently rather than only recognizing grammar patterns on paper.
Key techniques include:
Comprehensible input: introducing new vocabulary and grammar through understandable conversation, stories, and real-life examples.
Active speaking practice: students speak from the beginning, even at beginner level. Mistakes are treated as stepping stones, not red warning lights.
Context-based learning: instead of isolated vocabulary lists, words are taught through situations like ordering food, making friends, traveling, studying, or online chatting.
Pronunciation and tones coaching: especially important in Mandarin Chinese. I help students build accurate tones early so they can be understood naturally.
Cultural integration: memes, music, films, internet slang, festivals, and social etiquette are woven into lessons to make the language feel alive.
Personalized pacing: lessons adapt to the student’s goals, whether academic success, conversational fluency, HSK preparation, travel, heritage learning, or business communication.
I also emphasize:
listening comprehension
natural sentence building
confidence in spontaneous conversation
long-term retention through repetition and interaction
A typical lesson plan
A typical 60-minute lesson may look like this:
Warm-up conversation (5–10 min)
Casual discussion using previously learned material to build fluency and confidence.
Review and reinforcement (10 min)
Quick recap of vocabulary, grammar, or pronunciation from earlier lessons through exercises or mini-dialogues.
New topic introduction (15–20 min)
Introduction of new grammar structures, vocabulary, sentence patterns, or cultural themes.
Guided practice (15 min)
Roleplay, conversation drills, reading exercises, listening activities, or interactive scenarios.
Application and feedback (5–10 min)
Student uses the new material in freer conversation while receiving corrections and suggestions.
Homework / extension activities
Customized exercises such as:
vocabulary review
short writing prompts
listening clips
pronunciation practice
media recommendations (songs, videos, dramas, articles)
What sets me apart as a tutor
What makes my teaching different is the balance between structure and human connection. I aim to make lessons intellectually clear while still relaxed and engaging.
Students often benefit from:
explanations that simplify difficult grammar into intuitive patterns
strong cultural context alongside language instruction
patient correction without making learners feel embarrassed
adaptable lessons tailored to different personalities and learning styles
emphasis on sounding natural rather than robotic textbook Chinese
I also enjoy connecting language learning to students’ personal interests:
anime and games
business and economics
travel
history and geography
internet culture
music and film
academic writing
daily life conversation
A language grows faster when it has emotional gravity. Vocabulary tied to your interests tends to stick like stickers on a suitcase.
