About Youssef

I’m a native French speaker and currently a doctoral researcher at UCL. I’ve taught French to both children and undergraduate students in England. Having completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Manchester and my master’s at LSE, I also have an advanced command of English. This means I can explain even the trickiest details and nuances of French clearly to an English-speaking learner.

I grew up in Paris and have lived in Nigeria, Vietnam, Singapore, Egypt and the UK. These experiences have nurtured my love of connecting with people across cultures. For me, learning a language is one of the best ways to build those connections and French offers opportunities to do so in around 50 countries.

My love of teaching was sparked as a teenager, when I helped children with their homework. That enthusiasm has stayed with me. I genuinely enjoy sharing knowledge and finding ways to explain concepts to students of all levels.

My approach is patient, approachable and tailored to your age, level and goals. Whether you want to improve your grades, tackle a challenging assignment, prepare for the DELF, GCSE, IB or any exams, understand a particular nuance or feel more confident speaking French, I aim to create an environment where you feel comfortable asking questions and learning at your own pace.

About the lesson

Whether you’re starting French, preparing for an exam or looking to speak more confidently, I offer lessons tailored to your age, level and goals. My approach is patient and friendly: you can ask questions freely, make mistakes without embarrassment and work at a pace that suits you.

As a native French speaker who grew up in Paris, I can help you understand both the rules of the language and how French is used in everyday life. My academic background in the UK also means I can explain grammar and subtle nuances clearly in English, drawing comparisons between the two languages.
Depending on your needs, our lessons can include:

Speaking and pronunciation: practise conversation and become more comfortable expressing yourself naturally.
Grammar: work through clear explanations and focused exercises to understand how French works.
Vocabulary: build the words and expressions you need for your studies, interests or everyday situations.
Reading and listening: develop your understanding through materials suited to your level.
Writing: improve the clarity, accuracy and structure of your French.
Academic and exam support: work towards better grades, tackle challenging assignments or prepare for the DELF, GCSE's IB etc.

Having taught both children and undergraduate students, I adapt my explanations and activities to the person I’m teaching. Above all, I want you to understand what you’re learning—not just memorise it—and enjoy seeing your confidence grow.

Tell me what you’d like to achieve, and I/we can build our lessons around it!

I took lessons with Youssef to improve my spoken French, and they really helped me feel more confident. He’s patient, encouraging and great at explaining things clearly. He adapted our conversations to my interests, I am a tourist guide, I was learning french for this specific professional purpose, and helped me learn from my mistakes without feeling self-conscious. I’d highly recommend him!
