About Chris
I'm about to complete an aeronautical engineering PhD at the University of Bristol, where I also obtained my undergraduate degree (MEng). I've worked in industry for a number of defence and security firms. I have one year's experience of teaching 1-1, and four years' experience of group teaching as part of my PhD. I took Double Maths at A Level and my undergraduate degree made heavy use of maths. I'm excited to get back into teaching Maths up to GCSE and/or A Level as it's so rewarding to see someone learn and improve as a result of one's own input. I get the impression that Maths gets an unduly bad rep and that establishing even basic skills and thought patterns can really turn around how a student feels about Maths. If they're able to start enjoying themselves, the real progress gets made.

The best way to learn maths is to do it - so working through exercises together, first with substantial assistance, and gradually less and less, is what I've found to be most effective. I'll design problems to demonstrate certain problem-solving thought patterns in isolation. I find that a bit of homework goes a long way, and specifically small amounts done often rather than large single chunks. Most importantly, the teaching should be adjusted according to what works best with each pupil in question.
COVID-19: with the current circumstances, I am only able to take on teaching via a video call platform such as Skype or Zoom. This handily also cuts out travel time.
