About Will

Organic Chemistry: Organic chemistry is the study of the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and preparation of carbon-containing compounds, which include not only hydrocarbons but also compounds with any number of other elements, including hydrogen (most compounds contain at least one carbon–hydrogen bond), nitrogen, oxygen, halogens, phosphorus, silicon, and sulfur. This branch of chemistry was originally limited to compounds produced by living organisms but has been broadened to include human-made substances such as plastics. The range of application of organic compounds is enormous and also includes, but is not limited to, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, food, explosives, paints, and cosmetics. The content that my lessons cover include structural formulas of organic compounds, functional groups (alcohols, amines, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, carboxylic esters), bonding (dot structures, hybridization, bond-line structures), resonance and acid-base compounds, alkanes and cycloalkanes and alkenes, stereochemistry, substitution and elimination, aliphatic compounds, aromatic compounds, heterocyclic compounds, polymers, biomolecules, spectroscopy (infrared spectroscopy, UV spectroscopy, proton NMR), fullerenes, organic reactions, organic synthesis, and properties of organic compounds (melting and boiling point, solubility, solid state properties). My lessons approach organic chemistry by emphasizing the need to grasp the structural rules and formulas of organic compounds, identifying reactions and mechanisms that take place in the organic world, and not forgetting about the physical and chemical properties that every organic compound has. I try to keep organic chemistry simple since the science can be overwhelmingly difficult if you are disorganized. I have tutored organic chemistry for several years and can provide help on whichever subjects present difficulty. Students must advise as to how to structure lessons.

Analytical Chemistry: Analytical chemistry studies and uses instruments and methods used to separate, identify, and quantify matter. In practice, separation, identification or quantification may constitute the entire analysis or be combined with another method. Separation isolates analytes. I offer lessons in analytical chemistry.

Chemcal Engineering: I have tutored clients in chemical engineering for the past five years. The kinds of questions that are usually presented have to do with applying statics and dynamics with basic topics in chemistry and physical chemistry. The approach that I take is question and answer based. Chemical engineering is supposed to involve learning how to develop products for businesses, government, and consumers. This doesn't involve engineering - this involves magical thinking, since these products are never from going to school to be a chemical engineer. Engineers are supposed to look for solutions to regional or global problems such as pollution. The study is supposed to involve biochemical engineering, biomolecular engineering, environmental engineering, materials engineering, etc. These subjects do not really exist in the real world - they are simply pretense. However, I do help chemical engineers apply chemistry to "real-wprld" problems. There is no strict chemical engineering subject, instead, there is organic chemistry, general chemistry, physical chemistry, physics, calculus, differential equations, statistics, microbiology, thermodynamics, and internships. If you combine all those courses together, you don't have products that suggest 'engineering'.
